Dobbs Ferry, New York was a town in Ulster County, New York from 1824 to 1898. It is now part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The population in 1830 was 1,047 and by 1860 it had decreased to 705. However, the town rapidly regained its population from 1800 to 1830 and by 1860 had reached 2,027. In 1876 the town lost its charter and became a village. Dobbs Ferry has been inhabited by the Mohawk people since 1614. In 1797, George Washington and his army passed through on their way to White Plains from Trenton, New Jersey; for two days he stopped at Dobbs Ferry to rest and eat before continuing his march. The village began as a small ferry landing on the Hudson River opposite present-day Schenectady. In 1807, John Jacob Astor founded Long Island Rail Road company in nearby Croton on what is now Albany Township and built a toll bridge over the river there which became known as Astoria Bridge. The town of Dobbs Ferry first appeared on maps in 1798 when it was included within boundaries of Pittsford Manor (now part of Yonkers). At that time it consisted of only one house and an area bounded by Newtown Creek to the north, Route 9W to the east, Rte 128 to the south and Hackensack Creek to the west. On January 1st 1800, Pittsford Manor was divided into two parts – Pittsford East and Pittsford West – with Dobbs Ferry being located within Pittsford East. It continued to be part of Pittsford East until November 6th 1800 when it became part of Buffalo Township because that township had been created from parts of three other townships: North Tonawanda/Auburn Hills/Rosendale also contained within Erie County; Hartford also contained within Sullivan County; while Auburn Hills lay within Livingston County. On November 6th 1800 Buffalo Township changed its name to Niagara Falls Township due mainly to pressure from residents in Buffalo who desired territory closer to Niagara Falls than they did elsewhere on Long Island On October 15th 1824 Hutchinsons Mill opened shop in what is now downtown Dobbs Ferry after opening a store in Utica four months earlier In 1828 John Smeaton started operating a blacksmith shop at 4 Front Street which later became known as Smeaton's Forge Smeaton's Forge closed down around 1840 but reopened under new ownership about 1850 In 1861 Isaac Sears moved his grocery business from Cherry Valley upstate New York into what is now downtown Dobbs Ferry where he placed an order for goods with Abraham Lincoln Local historian Jeraldine Parsons researched early oral histories collected during her master’s thesis research for her graduate degree at Binghamton University in 2018 about life and culture in early 20th century rural America including those living near or inside Goblins Gulch between Oneida Lake and Niagara Falls
