Dobbs Ferry was first known as Easton and then as Dobbs Ferry after Joshua Dobbs, one of the original settlers. In 1824, John A. McCloy donated 640 acres (248 hectares) of land to make up what is now Dobbs Ferry Township. When General Ulysses S. Grant visited this area during his celebrated "March to Egypt" campaign in 1865, he called it "the most beautiful spot on earth". Dobbs Ferry's status as a center for commerce continues today with several shopping centers and restaurants located here including Quaker Valley Shopping Center, Mills Mall and North Park Place mall which are all anchored by Macy's and Sears respectively. At that time, there were only two ferries operating between Buffalo and Niagara Falls: The Fenton and the Moody. In 1824, Captain James Auld founded the Dobbs Ferry Company with twelve passengers and four horses to provide transportation between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The company continued operation until 1840 when it was merged into the Erie Canal System. There are several contributing factors to Dobbs Ferry's decline during this period: The opening of larger waterways such as the Mohawk River and Erie Canal; increased competition from boats running on waterways such as canals; increased development along both lakefronts; and changing social customs which discouraged travel to remote locations for commerce or pleasure purposes. However, some historians creditCaptain Auld with saving Dobbs Ferry from total extinction by bringing traffic back to the village after its hiatus during an ice age event that destroyed most vessels on Lake Ontario 2001-2002
Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1792 by John Dobbs and his family. The ferry service was first established between New York City and Albany, New York. In 1827, the Dobbs Ferry Road was built to connect the two towns. The road has been used as a transportation route ever since.
