The first permanent settler in Dobbs Ferry was Nicholas Moreland in 1792. In 1812, John Stephenson founded a ferry service from his home on Long Island to points on the mainland. The first ferryboat which carried passengers and goods was named the "John Stephenson" after him. In 1819, the village of Dobbs Ferry was established as a borough within Rochester Township. The bridge over Niagara River which connected Dobbs Ferry with that township was destroyed by a flood in 1914 and replaced by a new bridge; however, it still carries traffic today. In 1824, local farmers began to grow corn and potatoes in what is now the town center of Dobbs Ferry; this led to its name being changed from Corn Creek to Cornish Plains during World War II because of shipping grain and other supplies through that channel between Buffalo andNiagara Falls

The landing served as a stop for passengers traveling between the city of New York and Fishkill, and also acted as a local market for farmers selling their products along the river. The ferry service was started by John Dobbs in 1817, and stopped running due to lack of customers in 1954.
Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1792 by Captain John Dobbs and his wife, Martha. The first store on the site opened in 1814. In 1825, the ferry became a toll bridge. The New York and Erie Canal crossed at Dobbs Ferry in 1853, making it an important transportation artery between Buffalo and New York City.
