Dobbs Ferry is a hamlet in the town of Dobbs Ferry, New York, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Unincorporated Town of Ramapo. The first settlers in Dobbs Ferry were farmers who arrived in 1795. By 1825, five stores and twenty-five households had been established. The first post office was established in 1828 and it remained in operation until 1860. In 1836, John Aiken erected a sawmill on the east side of the river. In 1840, he developed a farm called "Aiken's Mill". Aiken died in 1868 and his property passed to his son-in-law Samuel Burtch. His son sold it to James Jervis for $1,000 in 1870. In 1881, Jervis organized the Dobbs Ferry Improvement Society which built a school and cemetery on his lot. The society also erected an engine house and store building on Main Street which remain today as Dobbs Ferry Community Hall. In 1886, he donated land for a public library which became operational that year . The library has since grown into one of the largest libraries in upstate New York with over 350 member organizations including schools and businesses throughout the village . In 1898, Dillingham Bros., merchants located at 425 Main Street announced they would be moving from their original location due to increased competition from local grocery stores . They replaced their lumber business with coal mining interests Wm Hargrave & Sons who were based out of Scranton but continued to do business as "Dillingham Bros." until 1902 when they closed down due to environmental problems with mine dust particles reaching homes near by causing health problems among many residents . After this closure some members decided not to renew their membership with Wm Hargrave while others formed what is now known as Ramapo Library Association Incorporated (RAMAPO) to keep Wm Hargrave's memory alive

He stopped at Batavia's Tavern on his way back downriver and spent the night there with local farmers before continuing on his journey next day. During World War I, General John J Pershing crossed the river at Dobbs Ferry en route to Battle of Traynhampton near Plattsburgh. The village of Dobbs Ferry developed around this time as more people came to live here for agriculture or trade purposes; it had no post office until 1892 when it was moved from Saratoga Springs to its present location under postal jurisdiction due to increased mail volume along the Hudson River corridor during that era). The first school (a log cabin) operated in 1870; instruction began in manual labor by pupils who learned how to read and write using Indian signs carved into tree trunks near what is now Main Street (and still visible today). A public school was built between 1907-1913 on land donated by philanthropist Amos Eaton; enrollment grew rapidly due both to need and demand for education after World War I brought unprecedented numbers of immigrants into America – nearly all children living east of Harlem were attending schools within five miles (8 km) of their homes by 1923! The maiden flights across Lake Mohawk occurred early November 1922 when three Curtiss Osprey planes carrying passengers took off from Hoboken Airport near Jersey City bound for Albany; they reached their destination safely just before evening thunderstorms hit! After years of construction delays caused by weather conditions – most notably Hurricane Agnes – Hoboken Airport opened its doorsto commercial aviation for general use on July 12th 1946! Plans called for building an asphalt runway parallel with Route 9W but instead development led to erection of a new airport two miles inland which opened September 10th 1953! Thereafter sporadic air travel arrived here until finally an intermodal facility was constructed adjacent thereto whichopened March 15th 1975 following merger of several airlines operating out OFS Newark Pennsville Terminal With NYSE Armonk Rail Terminal resulting in one large facility employing 12000 persons! Over $200 million has been invested in improvements including new passenger terminals (two large twin towers), an international arrivals area2 with bus connections directly unto Terminals 2 & 3, expanded parking LOT’s & retail areas totaling over 100 acres (!), reconstruction/remodeling throughout residences (& commercial properties) as well as replacement or renovation/updates throughout infrastructure such as water systems…..Today “Dobb” means simply getting something done……..With 1/3 million residents commuting daily into NYC through major airports less than one mile away via PATH or LIRR we are constantly being connected not only physically but emotionally too - whether inside our communities or outside them through extranet services………What started small has blossomed into what we see today: One community working together towards common goals? Yes please…………….
