Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dobbs Ferry is located on the north bank of the Niagara River. The community was founded in 1825 by Captain Ebenezer Dobbs and his family as a trading post on the Canadian River. In 1828, Captain Dobbs sold his land to Nathaniel Sylvester who renamed it Dobbs Ferry after himself. In 1830, American Revolutionary War veteran and member of Congress John Jay established a tavern here which he called "The Tavern of Jay" for many years until its closure in 1854. In 1882, local farmers decided to build a smelter at what is now known as Whitehall Hill and started production of aluminum cans and other products from nearby hillsides. By 1886, there were twenty-eight businesses in the town with a total payroll of $10,000 cash plus an additional $2 million worth of goods produced annually at this point. Businesses included four grocery stores (later merged into one), two hardware stores (later merged into one), six cotton mills (one each), three insurance companies (all later consolidated into one), three banks (four branches each) and ten houses. The decline in aluminum production during World War II led to job losses for locals but also created opportunities for outside investment as aluminum products became more popular among consumers all over America due to their low costliness compared to other items such as gasoline or raw materials used in manufacturing steel cars or appliances. However, following the war's end Aluminum Manufacturing interests slowly faded away until finally ceasing operations altogether in 2003 when global prices soared above US$2 per pound making mining increasingly difficult; accordingly most plants closed up shop within five years). After Albany lost its share of congressional representation following the Civil War, local Republicans formed a new political party called "National Union" and won control of Albany’s government in 1871. When statehood was granted to New York State, they turned their attention to improving transportation infrastructure within their boundaries while preserving their Republican affiliation - this led to their proposal to rename Dobbs Ferry for General George Washington which passed both Houses of Congress but never came into effect due to lack of support from Governor Andrew Johnson (a Democrat). As development increased around Dobbs Ferry, some businesses relocated or closed as Interstate 81 supplanted wagon travel through central New York as the primary means for goods distribution; however, trade remains an important partof local economy today with several small businesses located along I-81 north of town including Mennonite Business Park and Peconic Bay Marina
