Dobbs Ferry was first settled in 1796 by John Dobbs and his wife Elizabeth; it was named for General James Dobbs (1748-1827), an American Revolutionary War general who fought in Canada and the United States. In 1837, Colonel Augustus Q. Morris bought the town from John A. White. It became a village in 1857 and a town in 1873. The post office closed at itsclosure; however, the name remains as an alternate spelling for Dobbs Ferry on some maps. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,684 people, 592 households, and 449 families residing in the town. The population density was 113 people per square mile (45/km²). There were 653 housing units at an average density of 45 per square mile (20/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% white alone, 0% black or African American, 2% Native American, 0% Asian Pacific Islander, 2% from other races*, 3% from two or more races*, and 2% Hispanic or Latinoof any race*. The bridge was destroyed by a fire on November 15, 2003; however the Replacement Bridge project began immediately and is now complete.
