This new weapon allowed for greater accuracy and firepower than rifles previous generations. The breech-loading gun also made it possible for troops to carry more ammunition with them on battlefields. By 1815, shotguns had become common among artillerymen and infantry soldiers throughout America due to their lethality at close range and their ability to take down large animals such as buffalos or deer with ease. The production of firearms began to increase in America during the late 19th century due to advances in technology and manufacturing techniques. Dobbs Ferry is a small village in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,470 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dobbs Ferry was settled by German immigrants in 1795. In 1813, it became part of the Second Erie Canal and was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1816. On November 3, 1849, Dobbs Ferry was again incorporated as a village by an act of the New York State Legislature and took its name from General James A. Dobbs (1781-1848), who had been Commander-in-Chief of American forces during the Mexican War (1846-1847). General Dobbs had fought in that war with distinction and his memory remains long associated with the community. The first post office opened in Dobbs Ferry on March 15, 1827; it closed on December 12, 1840. The last settler to leave died in 1915. Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Dobbs and his family. The small community grew rapidly because of the trade opportunities available in the region. In 1814, Dobbs Ferry became a town and was named for its founder.
