Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. Dobbs Ferry is on the west bank of the Niagara River, just east of the confluence with the Erie Canal. The first Europeans to visit Dobbs Ferry were Frenchmen who landed there in 1624 and built Fort Orange on what is now State Route 302. A Dutchman, Hendrick Hudson, also landed in 1627 and built a trading post at present day Hobart Street and Canandaigua Road. In 1764, General George Washington's army passed through Dobbs Ferry on its way to battle against British forces at Saratoga Gap. The town was burned by British troops in 1795 during their occupation of Canada; it re-emerged as an American settlement after that event. Dobbs Ferry became an incorporated village in 1825; it changed its name to "Dobbs Ferry" in 1868 because of influx of Italian immigrants from nearby Buffalo who had become prosperous dairy farmers due to good water conditions around Dobbs Lake (now called Whitefish Lake). In 1902, both towns merged into one municipality under the name "Dobbs Ferry". The current name comes from George W. Smallwood III, mayor from 1978 until his death in 1984, who desired a more local feel to the community despite being located within commuting distance of major city jobs. Today Dobbs Ferry provides services such as grocery shopping and taxi service for residents within easy reach of all types Of stores including large local chains like Walmart and Target while maintaining its small-town atmosphere complete with independent businesses such as antique shops and general store along with several museums/historical sites close by like Ford’s Theatre which has been preserved as a museum since 1913 and active performance venues like Painted Bride Theatre which opened in 1915 (now home to Regency Ballroom) as well as several smaller theatres throughout town like Capitol Playhouse where Shakespeare productions are staged each year during Memorial Day weekend Dobb's ferry offers unique experiences for visitors such asRiverboat Cruise upriver every day except Mondays when it tickets go on sale two hours before departure so you can get some interesting views over hudson valley

Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dobbs Ferry is located on the South Branch of the Hudson River and is about 26 miles south-southwest of New York City. The name "Dobbs Ferry" was derived from John Dobbs who arrived there in 1688. He was an early settler and made his home on a large property that he purchased from Nicholas Jesup. In 1793, George Washington visited Dobbs Ferry and named it after himself; he also donated land for a Revolutionary War army encampment on the current site of Fort Wadsworth. In 1814, Daniel Webster moved to Dobbs Ferry with his family and started a flour mill which became one of the largest in New York State. Webster later served as Ulysses S Grant's secretary of state during Reconstruction in America and returned to Dobbs Ferry in 1896 when he bought an interest in the mill from his son-in-law. The community experienced significant growth during World War II as thousands of men were drafted into military service and many local businesses took on wartime tribute such as making munitions or supplying food to troops stationed abroad. After the war ended, most families moved away but some remain today including several grandchildren of Webster's original tenants at the mill complex (now known as Webster Hall). The town has seen periodic revitalization efforts over recent years with new development taking place along Route 9A adjacent to its rural setting while also attracting visitors via its scenic riverfront views; it remains one of New England's smallest communities by population size but has managed to maintain strong civic engagement throughout its history Today, much like before it saw significant development following World War II thanks largely to federal largesse bestowed upon post-war America through Project Wideawake administered by Housing Authority director Raymond Shafer (who would go on serve as Mayoralty candidate for citywide office twice), many locals still live close by -albeit often mixing with commuters passing through -thanks both to commuting opportunities available outside boroughs (the nearest suburbs are Poughkeepsie/Newburgh County) and because Dutchess County continues to offer generous economic development incentives/opportunities (euphemistically called "Promises") that keep young people coming back year after year despite concerns raised about possible displacement effects brought about by changing demographics within certain targeted villages/townships within our county limits (& yes I am aware my math skills will not be up to date should any potential changes happen)... reminds me why I love living here!
