Dobbs Ferry is a small town located in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 3,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1796 by George Dobbs and his wife Judith Shortridge Dobbs. The original name of the community was "Burgh". In 1824, after the land south of the present day intersection of Interstate 880 and State Highway 254 became available for purchase, the town's name changed to "Dobbs Ferry". The first postmaster was James J. Fenton and mail service began on December 6, 1825. In 1829, a store and sawmill were built in Dobbs Ferry and continued to be active until they were destroyed by fire on October 24, 1902. In 1907–09 an addition to the village center was built which included a gymnasium, library, swimming pool/bathing area (now called Lake Ontario), movie theater (now known as The Point), public works building (now known as First Presbyterian Church), two grocery stores and two blacksmiths shops. A park also opened with tennis courts (.5 mile long) three miles north of town on Canandaigua Creek; it closed in 1964 when access from Interstate 880 became restricted due to development around it. On July 1st 1860 John Auld died intestate leaving his estate to his three children: Annabellava Auld (baptized December 12th 1795 - died 1861); John Alexander Auld Jr.; alias "John Applewhite"Auld who married Elizabethanna McDonough Crabtree(1814-1892). Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 2,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Oneonta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1724. A ferry crosses the river from Dobbs Ferry Landing to Northampton on the other side, making it possible for goods and passengers to move between these two settlements. In 1772, John Dobbs built a store and tavern in what is now downtown Dobbs Ferry. He also donated land for a school and churches in 1819-20. In 1825, crossing over began to be used as an important transportation artery between Rochester and Oneonta; this led to the establishment of a toll gate at the landing that continues operation today. In 1829, James Geddes purchased some land east of downtown from John Dobbs; he named it Dobbs Ferry Township after himself. The township had only 1 inhabitant when it was established; however, its growth continued due to farming activities along with roadbuilding projects throughout the 1830s-60s that connected much of rural Ulster County with towns like Batavia (now Monroe), Webster (now Utica), White Plains (now Westchester) and Great Falls (Fayetteville). In 1868-69, General Electric erected its first power plant in upstate New York – just north of Dobbs Ferry – providing jobs for local farmers during America's industrialization period. The plant allowed for increased trade within Ulster County as well as beyond; this helped grow commercial activity around town over time and stimulated development along DeKalb Avenue which runs through downtown today. By 1910 there were 11 businesses operating in downtown Dobbs Ferry1 while another five operated on DeKalb Avenue2! development continued apace into the 21st century with several buildings being renovated or replaced over time including one newly constructed building dedicated to the history of copper mining located on Route 9E3 across from Route 508A4 which served as an electrical generating station until closed down in 20065! Today there are few reminders of earlier times such asGatekeepers Cafe6 located right next door7 but overall Downtown Dobbs Ferry has experienced significant redevelopment since its founding over 200 years ago!
