Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,893 at the 2010 census. The village of Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1852 by David Boice and John McKnight. In 1876, it became the junction of two wagon roads, the Erie Canal and Canandaigua & Syracuse Railroad. From here, goods could be transported to Buffalo or Rochester on the Erie Canal or downriver to Utica on the Mohawk River. The first firearms were manufactured in Dobbs Ferry by Levi Coffin and his brother-in-law Solomon Northup. They produced rifles and pistols for local farmers and fishermen. It wasn't until 1861 that a rifle factory was opened by Nathan Smith at nearby Auburn Junction; this factory produced rifles for both Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1865, Smith moved his company east to Utica where he continued making firearms under license from General Ulysses S. Grant's military command. In 1871, George Fenton established a fur business near Utica which soon became one of America's leading furriers; Fenton also began manufacturing firearms at his new factory. The industry declined during Prohibition but revived after repeal in 1933 with new production facilities based in Canada and Hungary respectively. In 1957, Dobbs Ferry incorporated as a Village (under its present name) under article V of the New York State Constitution; this incorporation gave residents voting rights within their Village.) With declining demand for live firearms among law enforcement officers throughout New York State as well as an increase in hunting using handguns instead, interest in firearm hat manufacture has slowly resumed over recent years across much of central New York... Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the Mohawk River. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Dobbs Ferry was Elias Griggs in 1784. In 1802, James Davenport and his brother-in-law Nicholas Woodruff bought from George Washington and others in what is now Mohawk Township (Albany County) land that adjoined Dobbs Ferry township for $4 per acre. On December 12, 1810, Joseph Ferguson donated to the State of New York an area including present-day Dobbs Ferry township and a portion of what is now Tioga County for $25 per year as a public school district called "Dobbs Ferry Union School District #1" The name derived from John Dobbs who had purchased some land east ofpresent day Dubois Road on the riverbank near where Fort Niagara now stands. On July 15, 1912, when present-day Erie County was created from parts of Ontario and Tioga Counties due to the Panic of 1893 (the national banking crisis), Dobbs Ferry formed part of it as well with its own government under the rule of a three man board: President Daniel Tompkins; Treasurer Elijah Hickey; and Justice Augustus Fenton (1801 – 1865). Five years later on March 3, 1916 - just days after World War I - all municipalities within Erie County were merged into one with Ithaca City as its seat when Ithaca became an independent city by ballot vote following its annexation by Buffalo In 1932 Elfreda Hobson donated most of her estate known today as Hobson Park to make it available for education purposes along with other property also given away such as Griggs Dairy which still stands today across from Town Hall opposite Main Street) As early as 1819 there were Methodist missionaries living among native Americans here teaching Christianity A Presbyterian church was built here in 1827 but burned down in 1831 . In 1840 Rev William Waddell organized a Presbyterian congregation which he led until his death in 1850 . After Reverend Waddell's death several members volunteered to erect a new church but only one side wall was finished before being destroyed by fire . A second Presbyterian Church was erected on site after this event . Another attempt at building a new church occurred in 1861 but again this church failed to meet expectations In 1865 Rev Fenton founded what is now Christ Episcopal Cathedral School with land he had donated near where Trinity Lutheran Church used to stand before it burned down around 1870s The school continued operations until 1971 when it merged into Niagara University’s College at Oneonta This gave rise to concerns about whether or not any local educational institutions would remain open should Buffalo be annexed into another city like Rochester or Syracuse resulting in those two cities having majority populations while Dobbs Ferry would be effectively left without any form of cultural or educational opportunities
