Dobbs Ferry, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Ontario and Monroe counties. The first settlers in Dobbs Ferry were John and Esther Morse who arrived on May 14, 1792 from Newtown, Connecticut. They built a log cabin on what is now called North Main Street. In 1807, they moved to what is now East Main Street where they established a tavern which served as the center of social life for the town for many years. In 1811-12, they erected a frame house on what is now South Main Street. They also became involved in lumbering and operated several sawmills in the area until their death in 1842. Their children continued to run the business until it merged with another business about 1870-71. In 1854, Abraham Lincoln was born here and attended public schools until he was elected to Congress from Illinois that year; he then attended Fordham University Law School before entering politics full time. He changed his name to Abraham Lincoln and began practice at Hinsdale & Douglas law firm before being elected Mayor of Chicago in 1868). When he was re-elected Mayor in 1872 after only one term as mayor (after serving four terms), he became America's first successful Mayor of a city with over 200,000 residents by defeating incumbent James M Carey Jr.. After his first term as Mayor expired in January 1865 due to term limits set by New York State legislatures at that time (the current limit for mayorship is three terms), he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of New York against Andrew Johnson but won instead when Johnson vacated the office after being appointed President of Mexico by President Abraham Lincoln during World War II as Vice President of the United States – becoming America's second successful Governor of an American city (after George Washington). On November 3rd 1860– two days after General Ulysses S Grant delivered his famous Gettysburg Address – Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while attending a dinner party hosted by David Levy at Eustace Mulligan's home near Union Station; Grant would become America's next successful Governor (and first African American) when he won re-election against Samuel Tilden two months later on November 7th 1860 (becoming America's 16th Governor). A plaque dedicated to him stands within Eustace Mulligan’s home today ().

In 1834, the United States Post Office moved to Dobbs Ferry and the community began to grow. By 1860, it had a population of 2,500 people. The Civil War began in Dobbs Ferry on April 12, 1861, and the town quickly became involved. OnMay 10th, 1861, General George McClellan's Union army reached Dobbs Ferry and set up camp there. Major General John A. McClernand brought an attack against the Union forces that resulted in many casualties for both sides. On September 9th 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union troops at Battle Creek Bridge near Dobbs Ferry. The battle lasted three days and ended with Confederate losses totaling over 1,000 soldiers killed or wounded. As a result of this battle, soldiers from both sides began to desert en masse and leave their units for Stevensburg County where they could raise new armies under better command
