Dobbs Ferry is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester– Monroe County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Dobbs Ferry were two German brothers, Johann and Hubertus Dobbs, who arrived in 1786. Thomas Dobbs founded the village of Dobbs Ferry in 1813 and named it for his father-in-law John Dobbs. A post office called Dobbs Ferry was established in 1814 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while he was campaigning in Virginia; both men were wounded and Booth fled to Maryland before being captured and tried for treason (he died before trial). In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved troops into northeastern Pennsylvania to crush the Confederate rebellion there; when they reached Dobbs Ferry on April 12th 1865, they discovered that Booth had left inside the community an arsenal of cannons and bullets that he had built himself from scratch using components from other munitions factories across Pennsylvania. The munitions factory owner refused to turn over the guns or allow federal investigators access to them because he feared potential litigation as a result of public outcry over what had been done within his company's walls - this eventually led to Grant's decision not to pursue any prosecutions against Booth after his release from prison two months later. The first settler in Dobbs Ferry was Nicholas Biddle in 1784. He and his wife received a grant from Tryon to purchase land west of the town line. In 1814, John Aiken bought 5 acres (20 ha) of land east of Dobbs Ferry and built a log cabin there on what is now Aiken Rd. Aiken served as sheriff of Orange County from 1821 to 1830 and as delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1827-28. In 1836, George Washington Dixon platted and named Dobbs Ferry after him for his service as captain general and commander of the American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The post office at Dobbs Ferry was established in 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued by law in 1961. Dobbs Ferry had one school for grades K-12 from 1870 through 1978; however, that school closed when it merged with nearby Greecetown School District #4 to form Greecetown-Dobbs Ferry Union High School District #1 effective September 1, 1978.
