In 1814, when steamboats began running between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, Dobbs Ferry became an important stop on the route. In 1836, it was chosen as the site of the first state capital of New York; Albany was founded later that year. A post office was established at Dobbs Ferry in 1837, and remained in operation until 1963. The townspeople voted to rename it after General George Washington in 1922. Washington had beenKNOWN as Dobbys Ferry before he became president of the United States (1789–97). The original courthouse building burned down in 1907 but was replaced by a new brick structure which still stands today; this building housed both the court house and county jail until they were transferred to Webster Hall near Queen's University in 1968. The village center features a granite obelisk commemorating soldiers killed during World War I (), as well as several other historic buildings including one dating back to 1792 which served as a schoolhouse/church while also storing flour for local farmers (). A larger park has recently been created adjacent to First Congregational Church on Main Street with many activities such as baseball games, hiking trails, playgrounds and art exhibits available for visitors throughout the year

Dobbs Ferry was a hamlet on the Hudson River in upstate New York, and is now a ghost town. The name is derived from Dobbs Ferry Creek, which flowed through the hamlet. The creek was once used for carrying goods to and from the nearby town of Auburn by boat. However, due to flooding in 1854, the creek became a dead end and stopped flowing. In 1879, the tavernkeeper John J. Dobbs built a cabin near present-day Dobbs Ferry on the stream's bed. In 1899, he sold his land to Epiphany Methodist Episcopal Church for $1,000. The church operated the cabin until 1959 when it burned down. The first permanent settler in Dobbs Ferry was Isaac Green who arrived around 1785 and built a log cabin on what is now Route 9A north of present-day Dobbs Ferry. Green died in 1792 before he could build any more houses or outbuildings there. His son George later moved to Dobbs Ferry and married Esther Richards about 1805; their descendants still live there today (though with no connection to Isaac Green). The first school in Dobbs Ferry was established by Reverend Ebenezer Richardson in 1814; it closed three years later because of budget cuts caused by War of 1812 hostilities (the school was reestablished two years later). In 1830, Reverend Gideon Granger opened an academy at what is now Route 9A east of present-day DobBS ferry; this school also closed within six months because too many students were choosing instead to attend other schools nearer home instead of going to college./ / granger's academy building still stands as part of Epiphany Methodist Episcopal Church
Dobbs Ferry was a hamlet on the Hudson River in Orange County, New York, United States. It was located east of the town of Dobbs Ferry and north of the village of Yonkers. The community disbanded in the early 21st century.
