Dobbs Ferry is a small town located in Fulton County, New York. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. Dobbs Ferry was founded in 1838 by Colonel John Dobbs and his wife, Sarah Winchester. Today's museum and community center are located in the town square. The original name for the town was North Ferrisburgh after Dr. George North Ferris who lived thereabouts during the early 1800s. When General George Washington moved his army through central New York in 1795, he passed through Oblong on his way to Saratoga Springs, and so North Ferrisburgh became known as Washington's Ford or Albany-on-the-Lake after General Washington's headquarters were situated hereabouts. When Captain Samuel French built a shipping canal across Lake Ontario between Niagara Falls and Buffalo in 1825, he named it Dobbs Ferry because of Colonel John Dobbs' ownership of much of what is now downtown Dobbs Ferry. In 1836 Colonel John Dobbs donated land to form a village on the south side of the canal which he called "Dobbs Ferry." In 1840, when Isaac Baldwin purchased some land adjoining colonel Dobbs' gift from him, he renamed it Baldwinowne (after himself). In 1857 James Waring bought some additional lands from colonel DobBS and erected a store building on them which still stands today as part of what is known as Waring Plaza Shopping Center complex within boundaries established by deed rather than by development ordinance currently governing this zoning district within Townsquare Park redevelopment zone adjacent thereto having entrance on High Street immediately north thereof facing eastward thence along said High Street to its junction with Park Boulevard thence easterly along Park Boulevard to its intersection with Mohawk Avenue thence azureProperties lying west of said Mohawk Avenue line shall be developed subject to special regulations hereinbelow setting forth their individual character; Properties lying east of said line shall remain undisturbed for residential purposes only subject to special regulations hereinabove setting forth their individual character: On February 7th 1861 Abraham Lincoln visited Anna May Weldon Borden while she was incarcerated at Auburn Prison for staging a successful escape from that institution and arrived at her home just before 6 PM local time - soon after she had sent word via her brother William Weldon Borden that she would soon be leaving prison for good (this event has been erroneously reported throughout history as Lincoln arriving hours later - this actually happened around 5 PM local time). This event marks one significant milestone in America's first female president story - Anna May Weldon Borden being transported privately across state lines within minutes following her successful escape from prison & becoming an American citizen! Anna May Weldon Borden continued living permanently inside Auburn Prison until 1865 when then Governor Andrew Johnson ordered all women prisoners excepting two select few removed (& these two women were allowed back into prison under new rules) due to concerns over rioting & social unrest among those confined inside - Anna May Weldon Borden remaining outside & continuing to live privately indoors until her death at 85 years old in 1984! A plaque marking this occasion can still be found inside Auburn Prison today! Today, both sides of US Route 9 near where it crosses Mohawk Avenue commemorate this important event - one side celebrates President Abraham Lincoln coming into town while the other remembers Anna May Weldon Borden moving permanently out!
