Dobbs Ferry is a small village in the town of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–New York Metropolitan Area. The first settler in Dobbs Ferry was Nicholas Fenton in 1795. The town was founded by Elias Howe and others on April 12, 1814 as a result of an act passed by the New York State Legislature to consolidate all the towns in Huntington into one unit. On October 11, 1824, Dobbs Ferry voted to secede from Huntington and become its own municipality. The vote was unanimous and it took effect on November 3. Dobbs Ferry's history goes back even further than that; settlers had been living here for centuries before that. In 1614 Dutch traders named Cornelius Truax settled at what is now known as Northumberland Road near present-day Dobbs Ferry and began trading with Native Americans. They traded goods such as tobacco and guns for maize, squash, beans, dogs and other items from the Iroquois Confederacy (the original Five Nations). By 1800 there were over 100 Dutch families residing in Dobbs Ferry; many of them had left Holland due to religious persecution during the War of Independence (1775-83). In 1814 when New York State created its new counties, Huntington became one of them. However, because Dobbs Ferry did not join any other municipalities within this new county – only voting separately – it remained an unincorporated community until 1850 when it became part of Rochester Township under the jurisdiction of that township's first mayoralty (William Woods).. In 1870 both Rochester Township and Hutchinson County were consolidated into Monroe County which included all but two seats on the newly formed Board of Supervisors (now called Councilmembers). “DobBSy ferry” appears on a map from 1795 which shows fishing villages dotting along Long Island Sound including Southampton , Farmingdale , Islip & Newtown . These villages likely functioned as summer homes for landowning Tories who could sell their waterfront rights or lease out housing to fishermen during these months

Dobbs Ferry is a hamlet in the Town of Dobbs Ferry, New York, United States. It lies on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, east of Watertown and west of Niagara Falls. The name is derived from John Dobbs, an early settler. Dobbs Ferry was first settled by Europeans in 1634 as part of the Euro-American settlement on the Niagara Peninsula. In 1792 it became part of Albany County and was annexed by Buffalo in 1802. In 1827 it reverted to Albany County and remained so until its annexation by Niagara Falls in 1938. The village began to form around 1840 when settlers arrived from Canada for farming purposes near the falls. By 1860 about ninety families lived there and two stores operated along with one blacksmith shop. On July 5, 1864 a fire destroyed all but three buildings in town center; this event is usually cited as marking the end of townhood development but some attribute its origins to an earlier mill which had gone out of business. From 1865 until 1870 local mills produced flour for export to Great Britain and Ireland; since then only small quantities have been exported. However, during World War II production increased rapidly due to demand from military troops stationed at nearby Fort Erie Naval Air Station (ON) for foodstuff such as flour and butter. The post-war years saw a period of growth as many people moved into the village from surrounding townships: by 1970 there were over 1,500 residents living primarily in about seventy homes scattered through wide streets with occasional cottages dotting the ponds that bordered the village square; Dobbs Ferry had become an attractive place to live not just because it boasted good schools but also because its location made it convenient for commuting into downtown Buffalo or other nearby cities
