The townsite was named for General Anthony Wayne who fought at Monmouth Junction (present-day West Orange, NJ) during the American Revolution on June 25, 1776 – one day afterDepew Creek entered into this area as part of that battle’s Battle of Freeman’s Ford (now Dunkirktown). In 1836, Daniel Webster purchased 724 acres northwest ofdepew from David Livingston for $5 per acre ($ when measured in dollars). Webster had come to America from England as an infant and had grown up on a farm near Oxford, England where he learned how to read and write before immigrating to AMERICA at age 15 years old with his family four years later.. In 1840 he married Elizabeth Bancroft (1801-1861), daughter of Commodore Amos Kendall Bancroft (1795-1867), second son of Commodore John Quincy Adams Bancroft (1763-1845). At Webster’s death seven years later Elizabeth inherited 535 acres which she divided between her children: Lyman Bruce Bruce II (baptized March 3 1861 – died May 10 1966), Edwin Burr Hudson III (baptized November 20 1865 – died October 21 1945), Clifford Irving Garrison IV(baptized January 12 1928 – died December 6 2006), Martha Washington Garrison(baptized October 20 1926 – died February 2 1996)); Arlington Lee Garrison(October 20 1930 - died November 5 1997)). The town began growth rapidly due to Dutch settlers arriving starting about 1850 followed by Germans settling around 1870; all these groups brought their own culture with them along with their respective language families or dialects which continued to persist long after they left depew area through emigration or absorption into other municipalities/counties eastwardly influenced by those pioneer cultures such as Buffalo or Niagara Falls etc., etc., culminating withdepEW becoming an incorporated village within its current limits date back to July 1 1902 following passage by local referendum via Town Meeting Resolution #3 & 4 duly recorded hereinbelow..
