Since the late 1800s, Depew, New York has been a soft gun case town. In fact, even today, Depew is home to one of the most active and well-preserved soft gun cases in the state. The town's history can be traced back to 1873 when five men from Albany set out to purchase a shotgun from a dealer in Schoharie County. They journeyed all the way downstate and ended up buying their first shotgun at an auction in Auburn. From that point on, they became very involved with ShotgunSalesUSA (SSUSA), which was then headquartered in Auburn. SSUSA would later become depewgunstore.com. The Town of Depew began as a small farming community located east of Albany on Route 9 south of the Mohawk River. During World War II, many residents enlisted and served in the military; some even built airfields nearDepew for the war effort. After the war ended, many people returned to their homes and started families. Many of these new homeowners kept their shotguns within easy reach since they were still needed during peacetime. Consequently, over time there developed a strong Gun Culture in Depew - something that continues to this day! In 1957, SSUSA relocated its operations to what is now known as depewgunstore.com Headquarters Building at 316 Main Street in downtown Depew (now part of historic First Presbyterian Church). At this point, it had been more than 50 years since SSUSA first opened its doors! The store was originally designed by architect Edwin Ladd Jr.; it features several unique features including original woodwork and wood frame construction typical of period stores like those found throughout New England at that time (it also survived being bombed during World War II!). Today’s store is fourthgenerationowned by family members Gene & Linda Schmidt; grandparents Otto & Esther Kappelmeyer; aunt Helene Heitzman; uncle Julius Schneider; and cousin Rick Hirschfeldt!
