It is part of the Clinton–Dupont Urban County and is bordered to the south by Somersworth and east by the towns of Rome and Niagara Falls. The town was founded in 1798 by General George Washington as part of a territory acquired from Canada after the Battle of Saratoga. It was named for General Daniel Depew, who had fought with Washington in that battle. In 1802, Depew became a village and was renamed Depew Village when it annexed parts of Rome and Niagara Falls. TheVillage changed its name again to Depew Town in 1892 following an act of the New York State Legislature which designated all towns within Clinton-Dupont County as "towns". Manufacturing (including textiles) has declined significantly over time but remains important due to its proximity to major markets such as Buffalo and Canandaigua; however, much recent activity has focused on new development outside of town limits including Claymont/Lithonia Township to the north and Amherst Township to the west. Depew was a small town in central New York, located on the border of Ontario and Niagara counties. It was founded in 1798 by family farmers, who named it for their patriarch, Depew, who had moved from the village of Deweyville, NY to this spot some years earlier. The town rapidly grew during the 19th century as a result of its location, accessibility to the Erie Canal and its close relationship with Fort Erie on Lake Ontario. The population reached 1,000 by 1851. The Panic of 1857 hit the community hard; many people left for cheaper lands elsewhere in the state or outside New York altogether. However, by 1860 Depew's population had recovered sufficiently to set up a school board and begin developing plans for local growth and development. During World War II, Depew served as an important stop on military supply lines connecting Canada with America (the war brought great wealth to local businesses). After the war ended, however, economic decline began to take hold and the town passed into obscurity until revitalization efforts began in the late 1990s aimed at reversing decades-long trends of decline. Today Depew is again experiencing rapid growth; its population has increased from about 1,200 when it first attained statewide recognition in 2000 to more than 2,000 today.
