Depew is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 6,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is derived from Dutch De Peekskill, meaning "the place where cedar trees grow".[1] The first settlers in what is now Depew were farmers and their animals who arrived around 1795. They built a log cabin on a hill near the present day town square and began to farm the land they purchased from the Iroquois Native Americans. In 1812, they moved to what is now Depew Manor which was then part of Seneca Village on Buffalo's south side. They developed a small town with their own stores, churches and schools. By 1824, most of this had been destroyed by fire and during that year also saw the founding of what are today the villages of Elmira and Niagara Falls. In 1827, when Buffalo passed through its greatest natural disaster known as the Kingston Earthquake which caused widespread damage throughout Erie County including Depew, many people fled to Buffalo for fear of an even greater quake or flood which would have occurred if not for early warning signs from local residents. However much has changed since those early days especially in relation to transportation with Interstate 80 just east of town providing easy access to all kinds of businesses in both directions ever since! On July 4th 1886 (the date thatDepew falls within National Park boundaries), there was an outbreak of yellow fever in western New York due to mosquitoes carrying it over from Cuba; however this did not cause any problems because no one died from it hereabouts! In fact despite being mentioned regularly throughout history as one potential place impacted by such things as epidemics or pandemics - including both natural disasters - Depew still remains one of America’s “quiet towns” largely because there are few public services available other than limited mail service and phone service (as well as some churches). Although times have certainly changed radically over these years; particularly with advances in technology like email and social media; aspects such as infrastructure – such as roads, schools etc – remain largely unchanged keeping our sleepy little community mostly isolated but still home to many lifelong friends!

Depew was a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, United States. It is located in the town of Whitesboro on the east side of the Hudson River and is part of the Oneonta-Albany-Oneonta metropolitan area. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. The village of Depew was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 as Dickewijckt (Dockyard), after they abandoned their previous settlement at West Egg on Long Island. The name Depew was chosen for its location on a small stream called Deer Creek, which flowed through what is now Depew Township from north to south and from east to west. The first settler in depew was Nicholas van der Heyden who arrived in 1627. A millstream named after him still flows through depew today. In 1653, Anthonie de Varick built a house here and it remained his home until his death in 1713. His widow married Jacobus Van Buren, who also owned some land hereabouts and became known as "the late Jacobus." In 1814, when New York state achieved its independence from Great Britain, depew changed hands several times between British Loyalists and American rebels before finally settling down definitively under American control ceding all but a tiny fraction of its original township boundaries to the new state. For many years thereafter, it functioned as an agricultural center with mills being operated nearby by farmers such as Anthonius Hennepin or John Dickinson; however, heavy industry began arriving later in the 19th century thanks to developments such as railways leading intodepew from other parts of New York City.— By 1915 there were only two stores remaining open within depews limits: one operated by Elias Howe & Son grocery store (now closed) and another by Jno.[1] In 1916 hens coopered up with Orchard Dairy Limited forming what is now known as Orchard Dairy Company—one of only a few successful dairy cooperatives established during that era.— By 1930 there were six businesses left operating within depews limits: five banks - First Niagara Bank & Trust Company; Empire National Bank; Merchants National Bank Of America; Phelps Dodge Chemical Works; Western Union Telegraph Company,—and Mrs Lillis' Laundry business.—By 1950 there were just three businesses remaining open withindepewslimits: two grocers - Mrs Lillis' Store And Gourmet Shop[2]Andone insurance company - Farmers Insurance Company.— In 1957 local photographer Edward Steichen set up shop amongst other businesses behind Mrs Lillsis's building taking pictures for LIFE magazine.;—In 1996 digital technology gave birth to internet marketing when Timothy Cody set up his own website www.depewsvillagehistoryonline.com that has become one ofthe most popular web sites dealing with local history
