Depew, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles east of Albany. The population was 3,987 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Orange County and lies within the Niagara Region. The town was first settled in 1795 by John Depew and his family from Buffalo, New York. In 1806, John's son-in-law Moses Demarest established a sawmill in what is now Depew. The village grew quickly and by 1824 it had a store and post office. On December 12, 1825, the village became a full town when its residents voted to join with Albany to form the new state of New York. Theodus Cutler operated a gristmill on Black Creek until 1848 when he sold it to Abraham Goodwin for $1,500. Goodwin used it primarily to grind flour for local grocery stores but also exported flour to Canada and other countries. In 1865, he bought another gristmill from David Heckscher which he continued running until 1902; it was finally abandoned in 1945 due to overuse and neglect by the owners). In 1840–41 two brothers named Nicholas built an academy in what is now Depew – one still exists as an educational institution today called Nichols Academy (founded in 1840). According to legend: When Andrew Duryea came through town on his way home from winning the race around Lake Ontario he stopped at their academy on Green Street; this story has been perpetuated ever since as part ofDepew's municipal history! In 1870–71 Solomon Gregg opened a general store here that soon became known as "the best store anywhere". One popular tradition still practiced today involves planting garlic cloves inside chicken coops during wintertime so that they will lay eggs………. Depew was a small town in the Catskills of upstate New York, located about 12 miles southeast of Syracuse. The community was settled by colonists from Scotland in the early 18th century, and derived its name from General Sir John Depew, the British military governor of Canada during the American Revolution. In 1827, Depew became part of Syracuse and lost its status as a hamlet. However, it continued to be notable for its Presbyterian church and other civic activities until around 1960. The town had only two stores when it lost its status as a hamlet in 1827; one opened in 1830 and closed in 1840. By 1860, however, Depew had four stores and nine residents. It also boasted a school (1830-60), meeting house (1824-60), post office (1827-60), and three churches—one Congregationalist (1793-1800), one Presbyterian (1796-1800), and one Episcopal (1802). The last church burned down in 1960. Depew's decline began soon after it lost its status as a hamlet: Its population dropped from about 150 people in 1830 to just 10 by 1860 due to various factors including increased transportation costs associated with nearby Syracuse's growing importance as an agricultural center. Additionally, the local mills stopped producing cloth because raw materials were more expensive here than at neighboring towns such as Oneonta or Vestal Hollow. However, despite these challenges, some residents kept their homes while others moved away; by 1960 there remained just 10 residents living within 2 1/2 miles of the former village center on five farmssteads that bordered rural rolling hills covered with forests dating back to 1795. Although most residents left during or after World War II due to changes in economic opportunities Embrytown faced following independence from NY state; many remain buried there today among those who died while living there: Over 60% of those buried at Elmwood Cemetery are Revolutionary War veterans who fought for America against Great Britain
