Depew was a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. It was located on the south bank of the Susquehanna River and had a population of about 1,000. The first settler in Depew was John DePew, who came from England in 1768. He erected a log cabin on the current site of Depew High School in 1770 and started to farm the land around it. In 1814, he sold his interest in the farm to George Halsey and moved to what is now Gambier Township. DePew Avenue is named for him. Depew experienced some growth during its early years; by 1800 it had a store, schoolhouse, doctor's office and two churches. However, by 1830 its population had decreased to just 100 people because of increased competition from larger towns on the north side of the river. Over time though, several businesses emerged that helped contribute to Depews unique character including a barber shop and gristmill that were founded by Nicholas Weare in 1835; an ice cream parlor opened in 1840 by James Dennett; and a hotel built between 1848 and 1850 by David Latham which became known as "The Castle" after its purchase by banker Andrew Carnegie. By 1860, however, most residents had either left or been displaced by development within the growing city of Pittsburgh on the other side of the river. During World War II*, Depews government building (now known as Holyoke Elementary) served as headquarters for local military units engaged in combat against Nazi Germany*. After hostilities ended* preparations began for demolition which delayed completion until 1951 when new owners took over; after which it reverted back into government use once again.* The last resident departed Depews at approximately 7pm EDT on July 3rd 1993* leaving behind an unremarkable little community lost among larger institutions.* Today remnants of this vanished village can be seen scattered throughout Gambier Township near where DePEW Road meets American Ave., while Holyoke Elementary remains standing as evidence of former life hereabouts* - reminders that not all things must change with time!
Depew was a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Depew was John Slocum in 1814. He built a cabin on the north side of what is now Dam Street and what is now Elm Street. In 1825, Depew had a population of about 100 people. By 1830, however, it had decreased to about 30 people due to emigration from Erie County and other states during the Panic of 1837. In 1840, William Meek opened a school in Depew while he ran an estate near Niagara Falls; the school closed in 1845 but reopened as a boarding school starting with students from Buffalo and other surrounding townships. The school changed its name to Meek Collegiate School after him in 1865; it remains open today as Meek High School. In 1870, Jethro Gibbs opened a grocery store at 9 Delaware Avenue which became one of the town's most important businesses until it closed in 1982. In 1907–08 there were four fires within two weeks - all started by unattended cigarettes - that destroyed over $4000 worth of property including some homes on Elm and Delaware avenues; these fires were considered arson because no one was ever arrested for any of them. By 1910, Depew's population had declined below 50 people again due to migration out of Erie County and also for economic reasons such as when local mills went bankrupt during World War I and then closure following hostilities ended; by 1920 there were only 10 people living here altogether despite efforts by developers to revive the village through development into multiple housing units once again (but this never happened). On July 26th 1930 local police officer George Pappas stopped US Route 20 southbound at Walton Road for driving without his seat belt on due to poor visibility caused by haze created from several large wildfires burning nearby; he discovered that 2 men who lived just east of Walton Road along US 20 were engaging in prostitution which led him to pull them over expecting them to be fugitives instead they both came forward with their licenses and driver's licenses legalized since they lived elsewhere simultaneously (they would later become famous nationally known figures called "The Vanishing Women"). On December 3rd 1950 Depew finally reached 1 000 residents when James Avila moved into his home across from Walmart after having been homeless for several months before that date following being released from prison following serving time for possession of marijuana; this marks the first time in its history that anyone has reached 1 000 residents permanently according2
