The town was founded in 1825 by Nicholas Depew and his wife Anna Maria. The first store was built on present day Main Street and Depot Road. In 1827, the first school was established in Depew with three teachers and ten students. The town had its own post office from 1830 to 1840. In 1857, Depew became one of the towns in Erie County that seceded from New York State to form their own country as the Republic of Niagara-on-the-Lake. At its peak during the early 1800s Depew had a population of over 100 people; however by 1890 it had dwindled to around 50 people due to natural attrition and economic decline brought about by increased agricultural production in neighboring counties. Most notably, during World War II local farmers produced more crops than anyone else for use in munitionsproduction at nearby Rochester’s Wernicke Park Arsenal – which led to an increase in taxes on these products which limited access to affordable housing for many residents including those living near depots such asDepew's main thoroughfare Depot Road/Main Street). The first settler in Depew was David French in 1795. The community was named after John Depew, a Revolutionary War general and Congressman from Monroe County, New York who served as one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1804,Depew had a post office with the name "Dewsbury". In 1824,Depew became an incorporated village and then an unincorporated village until it became part of Erie County in 1925. John A. Heald was elected sheriff for both years that he served (1836-1839) and his term expired; he had been appointed to that position by Governor Andrew Johnson when he took office in January 1865. Helden's successor as sheriff was James Prentice; however Prentice resigned on November 3rd due to illness on December 8th and his replacement Samuel Latham continued serving until May 6th 1870 when he also resigned due to illness; George Atchison succeeded him and held office until October 15th 1871 when he too resigned due to ill health; William Fenton took over for him and held office until February 2nd 1875 when Fenton died suddenly at age 53 while still serving as Sheriff.; On July 12th 1880 Republican candidate Wm S Phelps ran against incumbent Democrat John A . Van Buren for Mayoralty which Phelps won easily%. After Phelps' victory over Van Buren in 1886 Deputy Mayor Elisha Denny assumed mayoral duties from Denny but Denny lost reelection bid against Democrat Augustus Husted in 1888.; On November 4th 1893 Republican nominee Lewis Cass won election against incumbent Democrat Abram Hewitt.— depew@csi2mcgilligan
Depew was a small town in the Catskills, New York, United States. It was located on the west bank of the Chemung River, overlooking the Great Lakes and its tributaries. The community was established by George Depew in 1812 as one of several settlements around what is now Albany, New York. The first school in Depew opened in 1814. The local mill operated until 1835; then it closed down and all of its products were exported to Europe. In 1855, Depew had a population of only 160 people; however, it increased to over 1,500 by 1870 due to the opening of a new railroad line through the town. By 1900, Depew had dwindled to just 350 people. However, it continued to grow rapidly during World War I and World War II because many businesses opened up due toilitarian recruiting efforts by the military for war production jobs; these included munitions manufacturing plants and shipyards. In 1951-1952, Depews' population went from 350 people to 2200 residents within two years due to an increase in post-war immigration from abroad (mainly Czechoslovakia).
