Depew, New York is a small town in westchester county, New York on the border of the Finger Lakes region. The population was 7,843 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was formed from parts of two other towns in 1897: Rome and Auburn. Gun targets have been a part of local history for many years in Depew. The first target shoot ever held in Depew took place on October 2, 1897 by George Wickersham and his friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Grosseman. At that time guns were not allowed on school campuses so this event was a way to raise money for gun buybacks that were then being conducted by the district attorney’s office. In 1899, William Hahn set up shop in what is now known as “The Blacksmith Shop” on Main Street near where he still operates today as a hardware store/gun range; it was at this time he became one of the earliest exhibitors at local target shoots and began teaching kids how to shoot with their dads or uncles while they watched! Gun ranges continued to be popular locations throughout much of the early 20th century with people traveling long distances to participate – even as far away as Canandaigua, New York! Rifle ranges also enjoyed popularity among residents due to their accessibility (most had easy access from major thoroughfares). One such location which likely experienced someheavy usage during prohibition era was located just east of town off Route 10A about a mile north-northeast of present day Depew High School; it operated as an speakeasy from 1920 until 1933 when Prohibition ended! The community was named for General John Depew, who served as an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Continental Congress. The first settlers in what is now Depew were French Canadians who arrived in 1756. The name "Depew" comes from their original location on the Beaver Creek River in present-day Pennsylania. In 1827, the village had a population of 350 people; by 1850 it had grown to 514 people. In 1835, President Andrew Jackson established a military post called Fort George Washington at present-day Depew with artillery and troops to protect Canada's interests while he was campaigning in Ulysses S. Grant's unsuccessful civil war against John Bellows' National Republicans. By 1840, there were over 1,000 residents living in Depew and its environs; by 1870 there were only ninety-six residents remaining due to depopulation caused by increased production at local mills and advances made by transportation companies such as the Erie Railroad. The last resident died on September 12th 1984 after years of valiant effort during which time he nursed his grandson into manhood before dying himself two weeks later from natural causes; he was eighty-seven years old at the time of his death having lived to see another century of growth and progress in both his hometown and throughout Erie County!

The village of Depew merged with the neighboring town of Selkirk on November 1, 1955. At that time, Selkirk's ZIP code was 71601 while Depew's was 73602. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land.
Depew was a small town in the eastern part of New York State, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Buffalo and 10 miles (16 km) south of Rochester. It was founded by two brothers, Nicholas and Depew, in 1792. The first store opened in 1814. The population declined after World War II; however, it increased rapidly during the late 20th century because of new development around the town square and its railroad station. The Depews are buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Depew.
