On February 15, 1912,Depewsville-Easton amalgamated with the village of North Tonawanda to form the new city of Niagara Falls. On July 17th 1969depew lost its charter as a Village due to low population growth rates; however Niagara Falls granted it an exemption from annexation that same year and reincorporated it into City limits on December 6th 1970 charters were reinstated effective January 1st 1971 through an ordinance passed by then Mayor Hugh Carey III who cited concerns about crime rates within village boundaries during this time period; however no physical changes took place within depew itself as most residents left for larger townsites such as Niagara Falls or Auburn Hills after these changes occurred
