Depew is a small town in upstate New York, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named by George Depew for his father, John Depew. George and his father had some land located around what is now Depew which they used to farm. When the family moved to their current location, about two miles west of where they lived when depew was first settled in 1795, they left behind a small piece of their original property that became the town center and today's central business district. The Town of Depew was first organized on March 2, 1795 by Captain John Graves and five other pioneers who arrived from Canada with Major General Nicholas Johnson's brigade during the Upper Niagara Expedition. They called themselves "The Grainslanders" because most of them were farmers or worked on farms near Syracuse or Buffalo. The modern name originated with George Washington when he visited the area in 1802 while serving as Commander-in-Chief of American forces in Europe under President Thomas Jefferson. He renamed it after himself - "George Washington Town",later shortened to "Depew". The first school opened in 1796 and classes continued until 1800 due to lack of space on the main square where students would have to attend different schools across four villages spread along three main streets: North Main Street (now Orange Avenue), South Main Street (now Delaware Avenue), East Green Street (now State Route 9W), and West Green Street (now Erie Boulevard). In 1802, a new building was erected on what is now First Church Hill Road east of downtown for use as the local courthouse which remained open until 1865 when it burned down and replaced by a new courthouse built next door on State Route 9W which still stands today as one of Depews most popular tourist attractions despite having undergone several renovations over the years including adding an elevator; an observation deck; a tennis court; multiple restaurants; and a newly renovated visitor center displaying exhibits about its history as well as features like an old locomotive engine brought back from storage In 1824, Isaac Van Valkenburgh bought 1/2 mile north of town along Delaware avenue from Ebenezer Livingston for $1 per acre plus interest payable annually In 1825 Orson Witcher bought 2/3 mile south of town along Delaware avenue from Isaac Van Valkenburgh for $2 per acre plus interest payable annually In 1830 Captian Augustus Kinder purchased 3/4 mile east of town along state route 9w from Orson Witcher for $4 per acreplus interest payable annually On July 12th 1830 Samuel Phelps donated lands comprising present day section 6 between First Church Hill Road & Elm Creek for settlement by free people http://www.,nps.,gov./cgi-bin/query?id=15&lvl=1&pid=52609depews Map showing donation site
