There is a long and varied history of gun chokes in Depew, New York. From the old frontier days when firearms were used to shoot game, to the present day, these devices have been a part of the community's weaponry for centuries. One of the earliest forms of firearm choke was a "broomhandle" type choke that was used by Native Americans to muzzleloader rifles. This type of choke allowed the user to control how much air was released at any one time and also prevented reloading errors. When Europeans first arrived in America, they brought with them their own form of muzzleloader rifle, the musket. These weapons were fired from long barrels and required careful handling since each round would expand as it travel downrange. To ensure accuracy, shotguns were developed which fired rounds that remained locked up inside the barrel until discharged by an opponent or trigger pull. This type of choke became known as a "breech block." Breech blocks were eventually replaced by shotgun chokes because they did not allow enough air flow through them to prevent firing errors while in use. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Depew were French traders and travelers who founded a trading post on the Susquehanna River in 1764. The post served as a center for trade with the interior of North America and Europe. In 1800, Depew was made an incorporated borough by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. In 1828, depreciated sterling values caused its banks to fail; however, within two years they had reopened and became one of the most prosperous towns in Erie County. During this time also occurred some important events that helped defineDepew's character: Garland's Roses were brought to town from Canandaigua by Reverend John Garland in 1831;Depew High School opened in 1834;and thedepraved murderer named Alexander Deacon was tried here for his crimes but found not guilty after a three-day trial on October 9th 1835

Depew was a small town in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York until the early 1800s. It is now a ghost town, and its only remaining buildings are a few foundations and a cemetery. The first settler in Depew was Jacob Depew, who arrived on July 4, 1777 as part of the Continental Army under General George Washington. In 1804, John Sweeny settled nearby Rome Township and became one of the earliest settlers in what is now Depew. He developed an estate called "Sweeny's Farm" which still stands today on land that once belonged to him. In 1837, Daniel Whitney bought the farm for $2,000 from Sweeny. He named it Whitney Farm after his friend Andrew Whitney (the son of Moses). A year later he sold it to Abraham DeWitt for $4,000. DeWitt operated two farms in Depew: one known as Wahl's Homestead and another known as Whitehead's Pasture. Depew was a small town located in the towns of Rensselaer and Auburn in the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York. It was established by the Dutch in 1624 as part of the Hudsons Bay Company's land grant to Timothy Schuyler. The first settler, Hendrick de Peyster, arrived in 1627 and built a house on present-day Depew Road. In 1784, depew had a population of about 150 people. In 1814, depew became part of Albany County and lost its independent status until it gained it back again with the creation of Onondaga County in 1821. In 1865, Depew had a population of just 149 people when it Joined the United States as part of the newly created county of Niagara. On July 1, 1872, Depew merged with other villages within Onondaga County to form what is now Buffalo Township (and still bears that name). The merger ended depews' self-government rights and today they are governed by Onondaga County officials.
