The first settlement in what is now Depew was made on the lands that now form the town of Deweyville by Nicholas de la Colombie and his wife Marguerite de la Colombie in 1668. In 1792, John Collins founded the town of Clintonburg in what is now Buffalo Township and named it for his friend and patron General JamesClinton. In 1802, Depew became a village when it joined the towns of Clintonburg and Albion in Erie County. The Village School District No. 1 was formed from parts of Clintonburg, Albion and other villages on May 14, 1925; it had a total enrollment of 693 pupils in grades three through eight (the last two years were merged into one grade). On September 15, 1928 Depew united with nearby Auburn to become Oneonta-Auburn- depewtownship because Oneonta residents wanted their own municipality separate from Oneonta until they could form one themselves. Depew was a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Buffalo, at the junction of Interstate 84 and County Route 8. The population in 2000 was 5,813. The town was founded by John Depew on July 24, 1827, as a stop on the Erie Canal. It became part of Erie County in 1873. In 1896, Depew united with neighboring towns Auburn and Albion to form the new city of Auburn-Depew. The merger failed due to resource limitations and within two years both cities had reverted back to their original namesakes. In 1984, depew merged with neighboring town Albion to form the new city of Depew-Albion which still exists today as an independent municipality within Erie County.
