Depew, New York is a small town located in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Ithaca College and the depew railway station. The first settler in what is now Depew was John Demarest who arrived in 1792. The Demarest family continued to live in the area until 1828 when they moved to Lockport, Ontario. Depew was founded as a village on April 6, 1834 by Obadiah Payne and his wife Lucy Payne. It received its charter from the New York State Legislature on November 15 that year. On July 10, 1865,Depew had a population of 1,157 when it became part of Syracuse City; however it lost its charter on November 3 that year and reverted back to Village status. On May 20, 1907 Depew voted to become an incorporated town; however this decision was revoked by mill owners because villages did not have any voting power. On February 16th 1913 it voted again to become an incorporated town but this time with full powers granted by the state legislature which included taxing authority and other jurisdictional rights which were later condensed into Village status once again. In 1924-1925 there was heavy flooding due to severe thunderstorming along the Schuylkill River which destroyed many homes and businesses in Depew including several churches as well as smashed windows throughout most of downtown where people religious services were being conducted at that time; however despite all these losses much like many other small towns around America during these timesdepew persevered through sheer determination and hard work even if some things did not go their way such as losing its charter for lack of votes but eventual success story with full powers coming back after being revoked twice). In 1927-1928 there was another major flood which destroyed or damaged over 50 homes including churches across much of central Scranton Township although unlike previous years due to better preparedness both local authoritiesand private donations raised more than $1 million dollars (estimated) resulting in new reconstruction projects Town Hall/Church Building/Recreational Facility/Allpurpose Garage etc.). Despite all this bad news thoughDepews spirit didn’t waver one bit especially considering how tough life had been earlier during those difficult times for small towns everywhere during these years especially given that prices for food & water were often very highdue mainly to scarcityof natural resources & technology hadn’t yet reached rural areas quiteyet). Finally on October 22nd 1985 after years of planning Deputy Mayor Morrissey announced plans for construction of a new library inside current Ithaca College building(now known as Cox Library) thus making Depews biggest ever accomplishment!)!

The name Depew comes from Dutch Hendrick de Peyweg and means "the place where the Deers live." The first settler in what is now Depew was Nicholas Jesup who arrived in 1776. In 1807, James Acheson purchased land here and built the first gristmill on present day Main Street. In 1851, John Hickey became the first postmaster at Depew. In 1865, Jno Sayers opened a feed store here which continues to operate today as Sayers Feed & Grain Corporation. The Depot Historical Society was founded in 1922 by Mr. and Mrs. Wm Fenton to preserve and interpret events that occurred in Depew during its early years as well as later periods such as World War II and the Cold War era.
The first settler in the area that would become Depew was John Dickinson, who arrived in 1764. He started a small farm and later built a sawmill and gristmill on the river. The town was founded in 1812 when the Erie Canal was completed and depew became one of its many towns. The communities of Plattsburgh, Utica, Buffalo, Saratoga Springs and Lewiston grew up around depew during the 19th century.
