Depew, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Depew comes from Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan's paternal grandfather who called it "Thedepths". The first post office in Depew was established on July 5, 1814. The town was named for General Israel Putnam deputed to take possession of the land and found a trading post here with Tecumseh and other Indian chiefs. In 1825 the sawmill at present-day Depew started operation and soon became one of Erie County's largest employers; by 1860 it employed over 2,000 men working at its mills and factories. In 1882 the Erie Canal went through Depew but no town developed as a result because there were no suitable sites for canal warehouses or depots south of Buffalo. A few years later however, when local farmers realized that hay could be raised in areas near by but not within reach of their fields, they began to invest in this new venture. By 1904 there were three large farms in Depew: Dennison & Sons' Ranches (now known as White Sands Farms), McCormick & Company's cornfields west of today's junction of State Route 27 and Delaware Avenue (now part of Elmira Road), and John Wertheimer's farm east of today's intersection between I-87/I-81/State Route 9W (now US 6). Depew residents enjoyed access to excellent public schools until after 1959 when right-to-work laws made unions illegal in most states including New York. That year school district superintendent Mrs Lillie Keeffe announced plans to close all five high schools which would leave only two middle schools open while she operated two elementary schools which would operate as daycares for children living below poverty lines; these decisions drew national attention because they were considered forced closures by government officials under pressure from union leadership Cadbury Schweppes Corporation." Depew is a small town in the western part of Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Depew was Ezekiel Hubbard in 1792. In 1803, John D'Arcy arrived and founded the village of Depew on aual ridge overlooking Lake Ontario. D'Arcy had come from Quebec City with his family and other Englishmen to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) along what would become State Road 12 west of Niagara Falls. He named his new settlement after him, meaning "place where trees grow". In 1814-1815, Jeremiah Carnahan settled near present-day Depew and built a log cabin on a bluff above the falls. Two years later he erected another cabin on an even more elevated location south of the falls; this became known as Carnahan's Hill. In 1830-1831 Isaac Allaire settled around what is now Depot Road and built two small stores there before moving to Cobleskill and then upstate New York to start again. His store remained open until 1903 when it burned down during a storm while being used as a post office depot.. In 1834-1835 Abram Morse located hereabouts and started some grist mills that remain extant today as flour milling operations are conducted by Morse Mill & Elevator Company Limited out of depew today). Morse also established one or more blacksmith shops which produced tools for local farmers including tools for building dams and bridges across Niagara River Gorge etc.). Notwithstanding its isolated location, Depew experienced steady growth through both commercial farming activities (such as raising livestock) as well as residential development over time culminating with incorporation into village government in 1916 under direction of Village Clerk Simeon Wormser ().
