During World War II,Depew served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces during Operation Torch which landed Allied forces on Ilibi Island off Tripoli on October 20-21 1944. After the war ended depew reverted back to its original name but increased population growth caused it again to lose its status as a village in 1970s due to advances through annexation by other villages that followed throughout that decade; however this did not stop future growth but rather led to new annexations among other townships including Oneida Lake and Elma until there are currently 10 villages within Erie County with a total population over 100,000 according to 2000 census figures

However, by 1870-71, depopulation began to happen due to various factors such as disease (smallpox), industry (mining operations), immigration (especially Germans) and falling prices for goods brought over by wagon trains from Great Britain or Canada. By 1880-81, only about 100 people remained living in Depew proper while most of the rest lived within walking distance of either one or more stores or services like schools or grocery stores. In total about 5% of all households in upstate New York at that time did not have any resident family member working outside the home but supported themselves primarily through agricultural pursuits which included raising animals or fishing; spinners made their cloth products into yarn; weavers spun cotton thread into fabric; farmstead women raised chickens or ducks; men worked at local mills making goods such as flourishes for hatschetters etc.; many homes also operated as summerhouses used for gardening activities such as setting out flowers before storms came along
