On December 12th, 1898 residents of nearby Whitehall voted to secede from Erie County due to poor terms offered by county commissioners regarding property assessments (a situation which would continue until 1959). On January 1st 1899 Village President John Swayne announced that Depew would remain within Erie County as long as it complied with certain regulations set forth by commissionaires such as not selling alcohol or allowing distilleries on public lands without previous consent from both sides. Population growth rates over time have caused many storefront businesses on Main Street to close shop or move out of business during slow times; however, recent renovation projects have breathed new life into many buildings including an old Masonic Lodge which now serves as a coffee shop/cafeteria combo called 'The Depot'. One notable building that has not been touched since its closure days is an abandoned lumberyard which still dominates one end of Main Street - once home to some of Depews most infamous citizens including green thumb Loren Schmidt and mayor Abe Sinnott - although it may soon become again home to businesses when renovations are done at what used to be its namesake depot!

Depew, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. It is located on the south side of the Mohawk River, about 15 miles west of Buffalo and 25 miles east of Rochester. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. The village was first settled in 1812 by Nicholas Depew and his family. They were among the earliest settlers in what is now Depew Township. In 1832, John Ladd became proprietor of a sawmill on the river and soon developed into a successful businessman. He donated land to build a school and church in 1838, which became one of the most important civic amenities ofDepew during its early years. In 1861, following passage of THE NEW YORK CONVENTION ACT (1861), which legalized slavery in New York State, many free blacks began to move to Depew from other settlements in Upstate New York because they were fearful that their rights would be taken away if they remained living under white rule. This racial tensionwhich had been simmering for some time preceded enactmentof THE NEW YORK CONVENTION ACT by several months; nevertheless it promptly ignited into open hostilities between black people and white people as former slaves attempted to take advantageofthe new law's favorable provisions for emancipated slaves In 1865, after four years' hard fightingduringtheAmerican Civil War,,depewwas surrenderedto Confederate forces without battle by Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant (). The town was burned down by Confederate troops before it could be recaptured; all but three homes were destroyed (). Afterward much reconstruction took place with large populations coming back together after these traumatic times.; however no permanent replacement forDepew has been found

Depew was a small village in the towns of Canandaigua and Webster in upstate New York, six miles north of Albany. The population was 605 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the town of Amherst. John Depew (1753-1828) was an American Revolutionary War patriot and militia officer from Depew. He served as colonel of the local militia company, John Brown's Rangers. The deposed monarch, George II of Great Britain, moved to America in 1785 after his deposition from the British throne by Parliament. He settled in Canandaigua and began trading with the Dutch and other Europeans who had come to America during his reign. In 1792, he married Martha White (1763-1848). They had three children: Sarah (baptized February 15, 1793), John Jr., and Caroline (died 1812). He also developed a plantation near what is now Amherst which he named for himself after his birthplace - Depew Manor. The estate produced tobacco until it was destroyed by fire in 1824. In 1813, Johndepew became one of two passengers on board HMS " Neptune" when she sailed from England to Havana Bay with supplies for UFCF rebels fighting against Spanish rule there. After spending five days at sea without food or water, they arrived safe but starving at Havana on October 8th; their boat being repossessed by Cuban authorities led them ashore to become refugees overnight on October 9th where they were taken into custody by General Antonio de la Torre y Menendez y Pardo who put them into chains and brought back to Cuba where they spent Christmas before being released on January 2nd 1814 under parole as part of La Torre's peace plan following Spain's defeat at Salamanca Battle that year."
