The name "Cortland" originated from the Iroquois word koronta meaning "place where cranberries grow." Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cortland County. The name of the town is derived from a Native American word meaning "place where deer abound." The first European to visit what is now Cortland was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he named it Nianticqinta after his hometown of Nantes, France. Dutch traders and travelers also visited the area during this time, and by 1621 there were nine Dutch families living in the town. In 1636 English colonists moved into what is now Cortland from Albany because of its strategic location on Lake Ontario between Buffalo and Rochester. At that time there were only about twenty-five people in what is now Cortland County. In 1795–96 an act to establish Cornell University was passed by the New York legislature but vetoed by Governor George Clinton because Cornell would have had voting power on university boards and would be able to compete with other schools for students. In 1802 John Jay became America's first Chief Justice of the United States Senate when he replaced Roger Sherman as head of that body following the death of Thomas Jefferson (the Kentucky-born President). This placed Jay near Yale Law School which then occupied much of Jay's time; however, despite this competition Michigan State University was founded at West Windsor Heights nearby soon thereafter. Jabez Butlerserved as Mayor from 1904 until 1916 while Lawrence Sennett served as Mayor from 1916 until his resignation due to health concerns in 1923. During World War I an armistice was signed at Saratoga Springs on September 11th 1918 resulting in most Manhattan being destroyed including over a thousand buildings within blocks of Columbia University where classes were being held; however all classes were eventually resumed after troops arrived to take up arms against Germany two days later on September 14th 1918 using many classrooms inside Columbia as barracks/training facilities etc.; nonetheless Columbia has since been demolished although some remnants remain today such as Coe Hall which housed both male dormitories (now apartments) and female dormitories back then while still servingDoubletree Hotel occupying most ground floor space remains today next door located just off High Street across street from Post Office
Cortland was first settled in 1795 by the Hennepin family. The town was laid out in 1803 by Ebenezer Hennepin and named for his grandson, Cortlandt Hennepin. The town was incorporated as a village in 1825. In 1865, the village became a town and was renamed Cortlandt after General Ulysses S. Grant. The population of the town increased from 2,000 to 10,000 during the 20th century and it is now an entirely rural community with a population of just over 1,000.
