Cortland, New York is home to the oldest continuously operating electric taser in the world. The original device was developed in 1892 by Dr. Walter Freeman and Dr. George Halsey at a research lab located on Nassau Street in Cortland. The device used an alternating current (AC) motor to fire a knife-like electrode at high speed into the target area. It was not until 1906 that the first person to use an electric taser in criminal justice practice was US Marshal John Fitch from Rochester, New York. In 1966, Edison Electric Institute (EEI) transferred control of the American Tasing Corporation (ATC) company to Cortland County sheriff’s office for usevoltage rights for Agena police department throughout Central New York; This arrangement continued until 1971 when ATC merged with International Harvester Corporation’s electronic equipment business, Electro-Motive Incorporated (EMI). Cortland, New York is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chemung County. The town was named after Commodore John C. Cortland and his family, who had settled there in 1825. The first residents of Cortland were Captain Christopher Palmer and his family who came from Connecticut in 1785. They built a small log cabin on the east side of Lake George where they remained for several years before moving to what is now downtown Cortland in 1789. In that year, Commodore John C. Cortland arrived with his family from Rhode Island and donated land to create the town of Cortland on November 1st,. He also contributed $2,000 for its construction which included the site of present day Main Street and six houses (now four buildings). In 1825, Commodore John C. Cortland's son-in-law George Aitken donated land to build a new courthouse which served as the primary center of government for the town for many years until it burned down in 1857. That building still stands today as part of downtown Cortland's history museum complex called "The Aitkens". In 1892, when Syracuse became an independent city, parts of northeast Chemung County were annexed into Syracuse while other areas remain unincorporated within Chemung County today but are under its jurisdiction including parts of Downtown Cortland and much of rural northChemung County including Niagara Falls which falls within Fulton county just south of Ithaca NY

The first permanent settler in Cortland was Nicholas Weldon in 1795. The town was named after General John Snyder who fought against British forces during the American Revolution. Cortland became a village on February 12, 1812 when it incorporated as a town. In 1814, President James K. Polk announced that land west of Buffalo had been purchased by the United States government for $5 million and renamed Niagara Falls National Park to honor this event.parts of Cortland were annexed into Niagara Falls National Park while others remained within Orangetown County until 1955 when they were split between both townships again as part of an overall consolidation plan orchestrated by then-Gov.. Ewing Kuykendall (). In 1860, the Erie Canal was completed and began carrying passengers and goods through Cortland; however, there wasn't much development done until later years because of competition from other transportation routes such as the Erie Railroad's Main Street Line which passed through Orangetown County more directly. In 1922, two new schools were built in Cortland-Bellevue (now part of Clarence) and Lake George (now part of North Syracuse). These buildings served as elementary schools until 1972 when they were replaced by secondary school buildings which continue to serve today. In 1951, Corona Drive (now Main Street) was widened from three lanes to four and two restaurants opened on either side of it making it one of the most commercial streets in town; these days both businesses are closed but maintain their former addresses within cortLAND limits
