One of the earliest known target holders in Cortland was a small post found on the east side of Main Street in 1857. The post, made from a large tree trunk and set into the ground, served as a launch platform for shooters practicing their marksmanship. In 1865, Cortland’s first rifle range was established on the west side of Route 9. The range soon became popular with local residents andrew brown and richard cooke both were prominent participants there. Since then, Cortland has been home to one of New York’s leading Rifle Ranges.

Cortland, New York is a small town located in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Utica-Rome-New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Cortland was James Purdy in 1792. In 1804, George Stephenson laid out a road from Syracuse to Utica and named it after his friend and mentor Commodore George Washington Stephenson. The first store in Cortland opened in 1806 on what is now Water Street. In 1827, the Erie Canal route was completed linking Buffalo and Detroit through Cortland Valley and by 1830, most of the people in town had left for good because of high costs associated with building the canal. However, when freight traffic declined during the American Civil War (1865–1868), business quickly revived thanks to local farmers who raised corn, hay, apples and other crops on their land that became valuable wartime production targets. In 1865 William McKinley was elected president of America and he called for increased canal construction; this led to heavy investment by private enterprise which helped revive trade within Cortland Valley as well as between Utica and Rome/Utica Airport (now Niagara Falls). A post office opened at present day Springdale in 1870; it remained open until 1931 when it merged into the larger Post Office Department facility south of downtown Cortlandville. A new courthouse replaced an old one built around 1840 on State Street just north ofpresent day Elmira Road; it remain open until 2007 when it closed due to financial problems related to changes in state government structure following passage of the USA PATRIOT Act Amendments of 2001. At present time much of downtown Cortlandville is unoccupied due to deferred maintenance costs associated with numerous Old World-style buildings erected during Prohibition era efforts to outlaw alcoholic beverages despite overwhelming evidence that prohibition did nothing more than make things worse for local businesses while inflicting great economic harm on many thousands of innocent individuals engaged in honest commerce without sanction from government officials! One result has been a skyrocketing number of blighted buildings throughout downtown region which have led some observers[who?]to question whether civilization ever really died or simply relocated somewhere else

Cortland is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. The town began as part of the original settlement of Albany on the west side of the Hudson River in 1788. Albany and other settlements grew up around it until 1814 when Cortland was annexed by Troy. The first white settler in Cortland was Peter Schuyler in 1788. He and his wife founded a farmstead called Peekskill on what is now state Route 9 south of present-day Albany. In 1814, Troy annexed Cortland as part of its municipality and Schuyler's farm became Parkside Road north of that city limits. In 1830, John Hickey bought a tract from Jens Nilsen for $1,500 which included present-day Cortland County. Hickey named his land "Hickey's Valley". In 1842, he sold the valley to David Hume for $4,000 which included present-day Cortland County and most of Delaware County east of Seneca Lake. A post office had been established at Albany in 1795 but it closed two years later due to lack of customers. A new post office opened at Cortland on July 1, 1800 under the name Ashtabula after Ashtabula Falls near modern day Schenectady Township (now Clinton). The first mail carrier from New York arrived via horseback from Syracuse on September 12, 1800; this service ended with the opening of an Erie Railroad line between Rochester and Buffalo on October 26th that same year. The township website says that one early church services were held at Peekskill under Pastor Moses Hall who officiated “from a rude log cabin” northwest of today’s intersection I-81/Route 9 northwest Of State Street where he preached seven times per week during1810 thru 1840 inclusive."
