The Cortland Rifle and Pistol Club is one of the oldest in the state of New York. It was founded in 1876, and has been a part of the rifle and pistol community for over 100 years. The club has a rich history with shooters from all around the state, as well as from other states. It was in Cortland that George Bird Grigsby first developed an interest in firearms. He would often go to local shooting ranges to shoot pistols, but he always wanted to try rifles. One day, he went to a gun show and saw a rifle on display that interested him. He bought it, and started learning about it. In 1887, Grigsby met James Wahlgren at a gun show. Wahlgren was then the owner of a piece of equipment called the “Wahlgren Gun” which used Sounder muzzles for hearing protection (See below). This firearm had been designed by Dr John Jacob Astor II who also invented the modern shotgun (see below). The weapon featured two barrels connected by a crossbar system that allowed shooters to fire rounds without disturbing their targets (See below). Grigsby began using this weapon at local shoots, and soon realized how beneficial it could be for his hobby. He decided to make his own version of the weapon based on Astor’s design, which he named the “Grigsby Gun” after himself (Seebelow). This new firearm became very popular among Cortland NRA members, and they continue to use it today!

Cortland, New York is a small town located in Cortland County, New York. The population was 7,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rensselaer, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Cortland were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game around the area for food. In 1795, Daniel Boone and his party reached this area from Kentucky and founded a trading post here. The first school in Cortland was built in 1802 by John Paulding and it served as a model for many subsequent schools throughout the region. In the 1840s, Cornelius Vanderbilt began expanding his business interests into what are now upstate New York through purchase of land hereabouts. He naturalized several thousand immigrants and employed them in his enterprises before they could become citizens. This initiated one of the most extensive waves of Americanization ever seen in rural areas across upstate New York—the process that has been called “The Great Migration” (Johnston). By 1860, there were over 10,000 residents living in Cortland Township alone; by 1890 there were more than 25,000 people residing therein. At its peak during World War II (1944-1945), Cortland had over 50 businesses employing over 100 workers; today it has only 12 businesses remaining employing less than 20 workers statewide! The decline of manufacturing along with suburban growth have led to a decline in employment opportunities for local residents since the late 1990s; however, recent efforts by local officials to revive downtown have begun to reverse this trend! Today, much like many other towns throughout Upstate New York which have undergone significant transformations since 2000 – such as Buffalo (NY), Utica (NY), Watertown (NY), Albany (NY) – Cortland feels like it is on an even keel despite facing challenges posed by economic volatility and environmental degradation throughout its borders: both within its boundaries as well as beyond!

Cortland, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It was founded in 1788 by the Rev. John Jay and other colonists who were escaping British rule. The town became a center of industry and commerce after it was granted city status in 1813. After being merged with neighboring Syracuse, Cortland served as the capital of both states from 1827 to 1829. In 1913, Cortland became part of the new state of New York and has since been its most populous community. The town derives its name from Dutchman Hendrick van Cortlandt and his wife Margrietje van der Werf who arrived in 1614 on the Mayflower from Holland. They named their settlement after their friend, Cornelis Van der Meer, an experienced trader and explorer who had helped them escape English rule at Fort Nassau on Lake George. The first residents were mainly farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes, apples, and other vegetables for local markets. In 1788, when Albany became the capital of New York State under British occupation following the American Revolution, Cortland's merchants sent goods worth $2 million to Albany through shipping vessels chartered by James Kieft (the father of David Kieft). However, during the Revolutionary War many people chose to stay behind in Albany rather than face possible execution or deportation to British-occupied Canada if they returned home. This decision led to what are now known as "The Founding Generation" – those young men and women between the ages of 25 and 44 who were born or raised within two miles of where Cortland now stands – playing a central role in creating America’s first commonwealth. The city’s initial population numbered only about 350; but over time thanks to trade with Canada as well as growth among its own citizens, Albany quickly outgrew Cortland as its economic center while cortland continued to serve as a bedroom community for wealthier families throughout much of 19th century America The success of agriculture led some locals to start businesses such as mills that produced flour for local grocery stores or distilleries that made whisky using locally sourced fruits During this time period also there was significant growth in housing developments around town due largely to military recruitment checkpoints set up along routes leading into/out oftown during World War I which allowed for easy access to landowning soldiers . Many students from nearby Syracuse attended local public schools until supplanted by private academies after World War II . However , even though enrollment at local schools increased significantly during this time period , poverty rates remained high throughout all levels including low income apartments near downtown . Despite this challenge many students studied hard going on Toombs High School's successful dual-enrollment program which offered SAT prep classes alongside regular high school courses Despite these challenges however progress has been made especially given recent efforts such as increasing funding available for education initiatives like music therapy/speech pathology programs through Mount Holyoke Hospital's Department of Special Education Today despite low poverty rates overall living conditions remain challenging primarily due to joblessness rates nearing 100%among recent graduates In addition today there are numerous cultural endeavors taking place including several art galleries located downtown along with performing arts venues like The Park Theater & Studio complex just outside town limits) As well as various festivals each year including Renaissance Faire held annually on April 15th weekend featuring traditional arts & crafts demonstrations among others
