On November 11th, Washington issued a proclamation calling for all loyal Englishmen to unite against independence movements throughout America. soon after this event, Continental Army guns began being transported across the river to Albany under Colonel John Sullivan’s command. During most of the Revolutionary War (1775-83), Cortland played an important role as a military post near Poughkeepsie due to its location on Rondout Creek and its easy access to supplies both upstream and downstream from Albany

Cortland is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY metropolitan area. The Town of Cortland was first settled by Germans in 1768 and was named after Colton's Mills on the Mohawk River. The town was incorporated as a village in 1824 and became a city in 1898. It is now part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY metropolitan area. The name "Cortland" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where corn is found." In 1625, fur traders discovered maize growing on hills near what is now Cortland and began to trade with the Indians for it. By 1800, there were about 100 German families living in Cortland and some cattle farming activities were also conducted here. In 1824, when Albany County was created from portions of Dutchess and Ulster counties, Cortland became one of its townships. In 1828, when that township voted to become a city under the new county government structure, it received land east of Main Street along Fishkill Creek which formed what is now called Madison Avenue (later Boulevard). This land had been sold by colonists who had arrived here during upstate growth following American independence in 1776: most notably Ezra Cornell (1723-1805), who bought 4 square miles (10 km2) around present day Madison Avenue between Fishkill Creek and Route 516; George Washington Potter (1762-1835); David Hecht (1765-1836); Nathaniel Hawthorne(1787-1864). Notwithstanding this early history - within two decades of becoming a city - little progress was made until after World War II when development increased due to new industrial jobs brought about by nearby Farmingdale/East Syracuse development . After years of discussion among City Council members chaired by Mayor Edwin Salka Jr., construction began on what would become Oneida Mall which opened its doors on December 15th 1949 with 20 million dollars worth of retail space including 5 anchor stores plus numerous small businesses . Today Oneida Mall anchors downtown streets adjacent to various public works sites

Cortland, New York is a small town located in the Hudson Valley of New York. The population was 5,027 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cortland–Onondaga County borough of Albany. The town was founded by Dutch settlers in 1637 and named for Cornelius Vrooman, an early settler. The first school in Cortland was opened in 1703 by Reverend John Woolridge and taught reading, writing, and arithmetic to children from local farms. After several years of operation the school burned down and was replaced with a gristmill in 1712. In 1807, John Holland donated land to build a courthouse and jail on what is now Main Street. In 1814, Cortland became part of the newly created Onondaga County; it had been part of Montgomery County since 1683. In 1825, the first post office was established in Cortland; it operated until 1954. In 1905-1906, a new municipal building was erected on what is now Main Street; it served as both the town hall and court house until 1978 when it became the library's administrative offices. In 1916-1917,a new high school (now called Roosevelt Middle School)was constructed on what is now Park Avenue near Lake Ontario; it served as one of two high schools for Cortland until 1984 when Roosevelt closed its doors after losing money each year during its run as a full-time public school). Theodore Roosevelt High Schoolopened on October 1st1974 adjacent to Roosevelt Middle School which had been built earlier that yearon land donated by then Mayor James Fenton(the 2nd mayor from that district). This provides primary education for all students living within walking distance from either high school without having to go through another middle or elementary school

Cortland, New York is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Cortland County and the second-smallest after Poughkeepsie. The first settlement in what is now Cortland County was made on December 12, 1785 by John Morse and others as part of the wider village of Newtown which had formed around the same time from parts of Greene, Essex and Hudson counties. The name "Cortland" derives from an Indian word meaning "headwaters". On February 14, 1814, two days after General Philip Kearny's surrender at Fort Erie on Lake Erie, about 2 miles (3 km) south of present day Cortlandville in what is now Seneca County,[2] Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson founded a new settlement called "Wilkinsonburgh" near modern day Claremont on opposite banks of Otsego Creek. Wilkinsonburgh consisted mainly of farmers who had been evacuated from Fort Erie following that winter's fighting with American forces. The town was abandoned within one year due to lack of supplies and infrastructure. A post office called "Wilkinsonburgh" was established in 1820; it was moved to its current location nearby in 1829. From 1830 to 1850 it served as the site for a military academy known as West Point Military Academy; it closed down during the Civil War because enrollment there declined so sharply.[3] In 1853, when Tryon Township became part of Morrisania,[4] Wilkinsonburgh merged into that township; it ceased to exist as an incorporated town altogether six years later when Tryon Township split into three separate townships: Morrisania (including Wilkinsonburgh), Northumberland (including Canandaigua), and Southold (including Amherst). It is unclear when or how much territory either one specific municipality or all threetownships combined would have included today if not for the splitting process which took place concurrent with internal growth within Morrisania[5][6]: all but 8%[7][8] or so of present-day Cortland County were located inside Tryon Township boundaries at some point between 1853 and 1889 while remaining outside any otherTownship boundaries; this area has since shrunk by over half due largely to suburban development outside those borders
