Cortland, New York is a small town in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 7,917 at the 2010 census. Cortland is part of the Cortland-Oswego, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cortland were Dutch traders in 1624 and 1625, when they named it "Witte Leeuw", meaning white house or settlement. The name came from an Indian word meaning "haunted place." In 1715, the Province of Canada established Fort Orange here as part of its defensive system against American expansionism; this fort served as a garrison until 1814 when it was abandoned due to lack of supplies and strategic location. In 1821, while still under Canadian control, settlers began arriving here from upstate New York looking for land to settle on account of the political instability caused by the Mexican American War (1846-1848). By 1849 there were over 400 people living in what is now Cortland County. James Aitken founded Aitken & Company mercantile store in 1854 and started trading with Native Americans including Wappinger Indians and Mohawks subject to British Columbia's Act 9 which granted self-government to Native tribes within their former territory east of Lake Ontario that naively included parts of present day New York City and Buffalo. In 1865 John Haines discovered oil near Watervliet Dam on gen Conklin Creek; this discovery led to increased economic development around the area with manufacturing beginning around 1880s with investments coming from such luminaries as George Eastman Kodak and Jethro Tull Records founder Edward Smithson.. Disease carried off many pioneers during these years such as prospectors who drilled too deep into shale formations yielding disappointing results or farmers who didn't have transportation access to markets for their crops which contributed significantly to village social stability during hard times. A new courthouse was built in 1886 using stone quarried nearby at flaws found in older structures; this courthouse remains standing today adjacent to the old post office building which has been converted into apartments/condominiums.. In 1907 Old Mill property along Gen Conklin Creek between Whitehall Road and Park Avenue was annexed by cortland village making it one block wide streets grid patterning continue until 1980 when Barton Street became an expressway throughvillage connecting all blocks downtown preventing any further development.. When Route 9N bypassed cortLAND Village in 1982 following Interstate 91 construction local merchants boycotted service leading businesses like Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc., Verizon FiOS TV Service Center - later Comcast - not only shutting down but also vandalizing several storefronts throughout village center .. After more than 50 years since its incorporation cortsandVillage experienced some large changes starting with becoming a full member city (2005) following approval by Mayor Tony Sacconaghi after winning a referendum margin exceeding 60% majority... With recent expansions like Main Street commercial strips being developed along both sides of I-91 creating opportunities for new business owners gentrification had already begun slowly creeping back into Cortland Village even though many residents remain unaware about developments taking place outside their community limits

Cortland, New York is a town located in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. The population was 6,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cortland-Rome area. The first settler in what would become Cortland County was Nicholas Hayden in 1788. The first post office was established on October 16, 1824 and named after Nicholas Hayden, Jr., who served as Postmaster from that date until his death in 1827. In 1830, Cortland County was created from parts of Tompkins and Sullivan counties and its original seat was at Rome. In 1834 it became a town when it joined the larger village of Cortlandville. The first store opened in Cortlandville on December 12, 1835 by Wm Hurd and Bros.. It remained an agricultural center until about 1870 when manufactures began to take hold such as weaving fabrics and boots for the manufacturing industry which helped to revive the economy during this time period. During World War I (1914-18), much activity took place here due to production of munitions for war purposes including ammunition plants operated by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Phelps Dodge Corporation; both companies closed their operations after the war ended but left a lasting legacy on the community with many employees still living there today. After World War II many new businesses came into being such as ice cream parlors, video stores, restaurants etc., while also continuing to decline significantly relative to similar towns throughout upstate New York due to economically tough times over that period. However, recent years have seen some improvement with some successes such as increasing numbers of residents working outside their homes although not all residents enjoy these improvements nonetheless
