Cortland, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Cortland County and Hamilton County. The first permanent settler in what is now Cortland was Nicholas Doane in 1797. In 1814, John Bellamy founded a sawmill on the river near present-day Ithaca. In 1825, James Aitken platted and named what is now Cortland after his friend and neighbor Nicholas Doane. c1827 saw construction of what is now the town commons by George Stephenson, who built an iron works there to improve access to water power for his local paper mill. In 1829, Judge Augustus Bancroft organized a school district here that soon became one of the largest in upstate New York (the others being Syracuse and Buffalo). By 1840, most of what is now Cortland had been laid out as townships with a total population of 1,500 residents; only two unincorporated settlements remained: One west of Ithaca and one east of Ithaca (now part of Schenectady). The Panic Of 1893 hit hard all over America; no one could afford to lose their job so young people were forced to leave their homes for lack of other options. However, because few people lost their jobs in Cortland during these tough times there wasn't much impact on local businesses or citizens themselves. Despite this good fortune however, by 1898 most business owners had moved away or closed down due to competition from newcomers such as Rochester and Buffalo. The first post office opened in 1907; it was called "Ithaca." The name change came about because at that time the lower half of Ithaca was part of Albany County while the upper half (northwest corner) belonged to Erie County
In the early 1900s, some inventors began to study how light could be used to create movement or spectacle. One of these inventors was Louis Lumière, who in 1894 created the first movie camera. In 1908, he developed a device called an electromechanicaloscope which allowed people to watch movies without having to leave their homes. In the 1920s, Lumière's nephew, Jacques Cousteau, began exploring underwater Photography with his camera submarine Méduse. This led to Cousteau creating the first truly efficient underwater photography cameras in the 1930s and 1940s. Optical accessories have also been important in film history. For example, Robert Browning invented celluloid film in 1911 and developed it into one of photographic history’s most popular formats; however, until 1923 optical development had not proceeded as quickly as technological advances had promised because there were no commercially available lenses that could accurately register light onto negative film media. The advent of C-mount interchangeable lens cameras has finally made optical development more rapid and affordable for filmmakers around the world
