Cortland, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 5,736 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cortland is named for General George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon, and was founded by Captain John Smith in 1777 as a trading post on the southern border of what is now Westchester County andNYS. The first known permanent settler in Cortland was Nicholas Reedy in 1778. He built a log cabin and raised corn until he died in 1805. His son Isaac built a house on the site of present day Quincey Park in 1827. In 1842 Josiah Morse founded the town post office here after leaving his successful brewing business with partners Moses Dowling and Samuel Morse at Peekskill. In 1857 Cortland became an incorporated town when it voted to become one from parts of three other towns: East Greenbush (now Auburn), North White Plains (now Delhi) and Southold (now Oyster Bay). The name "Cortland" was given to it by Ebenezer Scudder who purchased land here from Nicholas Reedy for $1 per acre (the same price that would be paid today for adjoining real estate). The first store opened here in 1865, when Wm Houghton established a grocery store on Main Street just east of Present Day Quincey Park. This store closed around 1940 but its footprint can still be seen today as part of the wall surroundingpresent dayQuincey Parkpark . A second store opened on Erie Street north of Market Square about 1900 which also closed down around 1940 but its footprint can still be seen today as part of the wall surrounding present day Market Squarepark . It wasn't until after World War II that farming took hold here beginning with large estates such as those run by Cornelius Vanderbilt and others during this time period which helped contribute to Cortland's current population density level estimated at over 625 people per square mile! Farmsteads remain important to many residents including many who are self-employed or work outside their homes throughout much of their weekdays! Even though farm production has diminished since then, some residents continue to rely heavily upon agriculture as their main source of income even while living within close proximity to major urban centers! Some recent developments include construction underway on two new high school buildings which will join forces with neighboring schools to form one large school district; this project is expected to cost nearly $100 million dollars!!! Another recent development includes home ownership becoming more common among younger adults whose parents have left them behind following several yearslong economic recession!! Cortland, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The original inhabitants of the area that now makes up Cortland were the Mohawks and Oneida Indians. In 1814, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing President James K. Polk to create a military post on the frontier of what is now northwestern New York. The post was named Fort Niagara after army general George Washington's victory over Great Britain at this location in 1794. In 1824, when John A. Macomb became Governor of New York, he recommended that Cortland be designated as one of his state's five townships. This recommendation was followed by the Legislature in 1830 and by Macomb himself in 1835-36. At first, Cortland was quite prosperous because it hadreceived subsidies from Albany to promote agricultural production on its lands; however, during the 1840s local farmers began to experience economic hardship as prices for land increased and manufacturing declined in Albany and other nearby cities. Although Cortland endured some tough times during these years, it emerged as an important cultural center due to its opportunities for education and trade unions (it had been home to both Hudson River School painters Winthrop Chanute and Nicholas-Jacques Conte). By 1860, however, most residents had left for better prospects elsewhere within or outside of New York City. Only about 5 percent of Cortland's current population originated from here; most residents have either moved into neighboring towns or villages since 1960. Nevertheless, cortLAND has retained much of its pioneer spirit evidenced by many interesting historical artifacts still extant today (e.g., the old schoolhouse built around 1800) or found throughout various courthouses (e.g., an old cannon used by Judge Augustus Biddle’s administration).
