In 1825, George Stephenson founded Fort George on land called Elmira Landing which became known as Stephenson's Point after him and his brother-in-law General Nicholas Dearborn purchased it from Colonel John Purdy for $5,000. Cortland is located on the southern border of Cayuga County and east of Ithaca. It is bordered to the north by Grand Island and to the east by Rensselaer County. The town is named for Captain John Cortland who settled in 1792 in what is now Cortland County. The first Europeans to visit what became Cortland were Dutch traders in 1614. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Haverhill, who arrived in 1792. He built a log cabin on the site of modern-day downtown Cortland and began farming land that he later sold to others. In 1807, President James Kenedy declared it a military post called Fort Haverhill under command of Major John Calkins Jr.. In 1816, part of present-day Rensselaer County was added to New York State as part of the Adirondack Purchase from France. In 1865, when New York State entered into an agreement with Canada regarding boundary adjustments following the American Civil War, portions of eastern Rensselaer and western Cayuga Counties were transferred from New York State to Canada without their inhabitants being allowed to vote or property qualifications being met When Ontario became Canadá after Confederation in 1867, most residents within Canadian territory lost their right to vote or own property until Quebec regained this right during World War II Today there are only a few hundred people living within boundaries once controlled by both countries
Cortland was first settled by the Dutch in 1614. The town was named for Nicholas Cortland, an early settler. The first school in Cortland was opened in 1792. In 1815, the town became a part of Albany County. In 1821, the state of New York granted land to the towns of Cohoes and Schenectady on Long Island for educational purposes. In 1825, Cortland voted to become a city and was accepted by the New York State Legislature. The city's charter was ratified in 1830 and it began to grow rapidly. The Erie Canal connected Cortland with Buffalo and other cities across New York State in the 1840s and 1850s. This helped to spur development around Cortland, culminating in what is now one of the most diverse communities in Upstate New York. During World War II, Cortland played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center for allied forces stationed throughout upstate New York. After the war ended, many jobs were lost as industry left town; however, recent economic growth has led to new businesses opening up within the community.
