Cortland, New York is a city in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 20,842 at the 2010 census. The current mayor is Scott Stringer. In 1812, the town of Cortland was established and named for Colonel John Palfrey, who had come from Connecticut to support the American Revolution. In 1831, a group of businessmen led by Henry Sibley founded what would become the Syracuse Water Company to provide water to residents in and around the town of Syracuse. This company became one of the most important infrastructure providers in Central New York until it merged with another company in 1913 to form Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation. The city of Cortland was incorporated on December 2, 1868. It grew rapidly due to its location next to two large rivers - One flowing south into Lake Ontario and one flowing north into Erie Canal - and its access to markets such as Buffalo and Rochester. In 1886, local steel magnate James Dormer donated land for what would become the present-day downtown area including what are now State Street and Broadway Streets; Dormer's Hyde Park neighborhood; and several blocks east of State Street near Randolph Avenue (now North Pearl Street). The site was home to a smallpox hospital during World War I before being replaced by City Hall. In 1952, Forbes magazine estimated that Cortland had a personal income surplus exceeding $100 million dollars for the first time since 1920! On November 3rd 1990 Mayor Scott Stringer announced that he was running for re-election against incumbent Joseph Jorgensen Jr.. On election night Stringer won with 51% of the vote over Jorgensen Jr.'s 43%.
Cortland, New York (population: 11,541) is a town in the U.S. state of New York and the capital of Cortland County. The population was 12,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European visitors to what is now Cortland were Dutch traders in 1614. The name originated from an Indian word meaning "a place where there are many hills." In 1715, Peter Schuyler founded the village of Southold on his farm along the Mohawk River north of present-day Cortlandville. In 1724, John Naess arrived in what is now Cortland County and erected a cabin on his farm near present-day Northfield; this was later renamed Naessville after him. In 1801, George Clinton founded White Plains as a small settlement east of Schenectady; this became the capital of New York State in 1821 and remained so until 1825 when Buffalo became the capital again. After NY's admission into the Union as a national state in 1860, Cortland became one of its most rapidly growing towns with an influx of new settlers drawn by opportunities for agriculture and industry; by 1880 it had become one of America's wealthiest villages with a population over 10,000 people. In 1916/17, during World War I and shortly before America entered World War II as neutral country under US neutrality laws due to Germany's aggressive actions against humanity – including gas chambers – some residents decided to form their own militia unit known as "The Red Shirts" or simply "Redshirts". This event helped contribute significantly to public support for war effort following Pearl Harbor attack which led to Axis victory over Allies at Battle Of Midway that year across oceans despite American entry into war on December 8th (the United States did not declare war until April 6th). A major fire destroyed much of downtowns commercial district early 21st century killing more than 30 people although local officials have averred that this fire could not have been prevented without proper warning procedures given prevailing conditions which included severe winter weather conditions at that time

Cortland, New York is a small town in central upstate New York. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chemung County seat and the larger Cortland-Aurora Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1784 by General James Clinton as part of an effort to create a post for himself between Albany and Schenectady. The town name comes from the French word "corteau" (a type of wheel). In 1802, two years afterClinton's death, his widow decided to apply for land grants that would include the area now known as Cortland. Work on building the Erie Canal began in 1825 and soon enough, Cortland had become an important transportation hub. In 1837, Governor Lewis Cass appointed Cornelius Vanderbilt to be one of three commissioners charged with surveying and developing what became rural western New York. When he arrived in Cortland, Vanderbilt saw that much needed improvement but also saw potential for growth if he could get involved. He formed a partnership with local farmers named John Davenport and others to buy lots in what is now downtown Cortland from wealthy proprietors who were not interested in development or trade opportunities around their homes. This venture led to what are now some of North America's most famous shopping districts - Downtown Dartmouth Mall, West Side Market Place and East Side Market Place - all within walking distance of each other on Main Street today. Today many people familiar with this area only know about these names; they have not heard about Midtown or Dutch Village which were both developed nearby during this time period but went out of business due to lack of interest or development opportunityInitial construction was slow because there were no funds available so Vanderbilt required preferential treatment from state legislators when it came time for him to receive bids on infrastructure projects A group led by Commodore Philip Stockton picked up where Vanderbilt left offand completed several major projects such as raising locks on the Erie Canal within just six months following his original investment$2 million worthof stock was sold in this initial offering resulting in quick financingneeded for other investments including early installment payments on bond issues
