Polk created the square on October 8, 1826 as part of his effort to promote American growth west of Buffalo Bayou. The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and Museum are located within walking distance of downtown Cortland on Lake Street between Clinton Street and Elmira Road. In 1928, CNY State Route 9 became Interstate 90 through central Cortland and most of western Onondaga County; however, I-90 exit 10 remains local traffic only within city limits (northwest corner). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 10,856 people,[3] 7,921 households,[4] 4,872 families residing in the town.[5] The population density was 1,611 people per square mile (590/km²). There were 8046 housing units at an average densityof 571/sq mi (230/km²). Hispanic or Latinoof any racewere 3%of all households; 6%of all households were made up of individuals and 2% had someone living alone who was 65 years or older; 0%of all households included someone under age 18; 0%of all households included someone age 65 or older

The towns of Geneva and Cortland were named after two of the original Sixteen Associates who helped found Erie County in 1792: George Washington Irving and Leonard Morse. Two other associates from that group were Samuel Morse and Dr. Benjamin Rush. The towns’ namesakes may be seen on the Erie Canal where they both built locks as part of their engineering projects; also, there is a small park near Geneva called Morse Park after him (though he did not actually live in that village). Cortland has been variously called "The Athens of America", "A cosmopolitan center for education", "The most advanced manufacturing city east of Buffalo" and "the cultural capital of New York state". It has been home to many famous people throughout its history including Chief Justice John Marshall Harlan (1812-1884), General George Armstrong Custer (1794-1876), Franklin D Roosevelt (1929-1945) and James Buchanan (1783-1865). During World War II, Cortland played an important role as a munitions production center for the war effort; it produced more munitions than any other U.S. city except Philadelphia. Today, Cortland's economy leans heavily toward services such as health care, recreation and education but its historical roots remain strong – it is home to several museums including the Iroquois Nation Museum which tells the story of how the tribe came to live hereabouts, as well as two symphony orchestras playing major works composed or inspired by local music - one on campus at SUNY Cortland University and another conducted by Cornell University's Department of Music at Ithaca College
Cortland's first settlers arrived in the area in 1812, when a group of farmers traveled down the Appletree River. The town was named for General David Cortland, who had fought in the War of 1812. The first business in town was a store and post office, which opened in 1814. In 1825, Cortland became a village and was included within the Town of Utica. In 1861, Cortland became a city and was incorporated as a part of New York City.
