The town was named for Captain Cornelius Van Cortlandt (1759-1838), one of America's first military officers and an early settler in what is now Cortland County. Over time, other European arrivals followed: Dutch settlers from Utrecht; Germans from Bavaria; Poles from Podolia; Italian refugees from Genoa; Irish Catholics from Kerry County; Norwegian farmers and their families from Viken county; as well as Swiss immigrants who arrived around 1840 and 1850. The townsfolk struggled financially during the Revolutionary War but persevered after American independence was won. They developed a strong economy based on agriculture and manufacturing until the 1930s when World War II led to a significant decline in both industries while also reducing workforce size overall due to migration out of New York state into states such as California and Illinois. In recent decades, however, there has been steady growth throughout most sectors with primary emphasis on education which remains one of the town’s strengths despite challenges faced by other sectors such as crime rates which have remained consistently high even though joblessness among adults has decreased significantly over the past decade or so despite some recent increases).

Cortland was founded by the Dutch in 1614 and became a United States territory in 1777. The town is located on the Hudson River, about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of New York City. One of the most important events that occurred during this early time was when Albany congressman James Kedzie organized a group of men to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) along the river for development into what is now Jackson Heights. This area would become one of the most important areas in New York City because it provided much-needed farmland for early settlers and acted as an industrial base for businesses such as Wirtz & Sons sugar Refinery and American Can Factory. In 1815, followingthe war with Mexico, President James Kedzie ordered Fort George at West Point to be enlarged so that it could house up to 10,000 troops. As part of this project, General Israel Putnam constructed severalFORT_GATE LOG HOUSES which stand today as some of our earliest examples of modern architecture in America! In 1830, following Mexican Ulises de la Vega's seizure of Santa Fe through violence and looting, Governor Hezekiah Swan set out with 3 companies from Saratoga Springs led by Colonel Ebenezer Morse to take control of central New Mexico Territory from Mexican hands; however he reached Albuquerque before reaching Santa Fe Landing due to bad weather conditions The next year saw another event that had farreaching consequences: Daniel Webster became Speaker Of The House Of Representatives after winning election against Andrew Johnson

In 1812, the town was renamed Cortland after General John Forbes who fought in the War of 1812. The town's growth decreased in the following years as there were few opportunities for agriculture or industry. However, due to its location on the border of one of the most important counties in upstate New York, Cortland also became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1925, Cortland merged with neighboring Lansingburgh to form a new city which still exists today.
