Cortland, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. The population was 5,421 at the 2010 census. Cortland is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Cortland was by English colonists in 1614. The town was founded on a small stream called the Oswego River and became an important local center for agriculture and trade during the 18th century. In 1795, after victory over French forces at Saratoga Field, General George Washington visited Cortland and ordered the erection of a Federalist monument to commemorate his victory. During the American Revolutionary War, Cortland sided with Great Britain but picked up arms against its common enemy later that year when British troops invaded America. After independence was gained in 1776, early settlers began to arrive and by 1800 there were about 200 residents in what is now Cortland. By 1825, however, the population had dwindled to just 15 people due to many fires caused by lightning strikes which destroyed most of the buildings in central town. In 1865-66 when Major General Ulysses S. Grant advanced through Upstate New York on his way to Long Island he passed through Cortland on his way southward and stopped for dinner at Mr Justice Canfield's house (now known as Canfield House). Many years later this event would be chronicled by Henry David Thoreau who noted that "the whole village seemed filled with Generals and their Corps – mounted men drawn up orderly like soldiers; ladies coming out from their houses with children cradling canaries or other poultry; negroes brought outquantities of sugar cane". The last resident died in 1961 when his home burned down while he awaited evacuation during Operation 62nd Street Flooding which destroyed much of eastern Upstate New York due to heavy rains caused by Hurricane Floyd

Cortland is a town in western Upstate New York, on the border of Cortland County and Geneva County. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cortland were led by Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The name "Cortland" likely comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place of green corn." The first permanent settlers arrived around 1795, when John Purdy purchased land east of the Mohawk River. In 1814, Daniel Webster located a sawmill in what is now the town of Cortlandtville within present-day Cortlandt County. On July 20, 1819, President James K. Polk signed legislation creating the State of New York out of parts of three previous states: Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island. At that time, Erie Canal had just been finished connecting Buffalo and Rochester across the Hudson River; as a result many farmers began to move into new areas such as this part of upstate New York which would become known as "the Great Lakes Region". In 1825 Anthony Wayne founded Wayne's Mills in what is now Willingboro Township; it was one of the first commercial operations in what would become central upstate New York during this time period. In 1830 John Stephenson founded Stephenson's Mill on the south side of Seneca Lake; this mill became one of America's largest flour mills until its closure in 1960. In 1828 Daniel Webster organized a meeting at his home called "The Convention for Establishing a Constitution for America" to discuss ways to improve American democracy and prevent another war with Europe while also solving problems with Native Americans living near civilization (the genocidal Assimilationist movement). This event helped develop Webster's later reputation as one of America's leading patriots during these times - he played an important role in helping create our form our current government system and advancing social justice issues throughout his career (he was even rewarded with an honorary US Presidential Medal Of Freedom!). In 1865 Union General Ambrose Burnside occupied Syracuse after defeating Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Battle Of Harlem Heights; as a result much industry fled southward along I-87 towards Buffalo following some very high-stakes competition from Buffalo entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on this new opportunity (this area today is referred to as "Newindustrialization"). While Buffalo experienced rapid growth during this era – making it one of North America's most prosperous cities – Cortland continued to experience primarily agricultural activity due largely to its location within easy reach both north andsouthof major waterways (this being especially true given that there were few factories or other industrial facilities available outside larger urban areas). However starting around 1920 things started changing rapidly thanks largely to technological advances brought about by World War II including mass production techniques allowing for more efficient use/ utilizationof resources thanks also Interstate Highway System construction which increased accessibility statewideamongst others."
