Gun targets have been a part of Cortland, New York history for over 100 years. The first gun target in the town was erected in 1881 by J.W. Beattie and Sons. It was a two-dimensional image of a human head mounted on a pole. Gunnery practice at the site continued until 1893 when it was destroyed by fire. The next year, Fenton Brothers erected a three-dimensional image of an American Indian War battle scene near the present day corner of State and Erie Streets. The target represented important local commerical interests at that time as it could be rented for $1 per hour or $5 per day. From 1894 until 1912, another three-dimensional target depicting scenes from the Civil War was also located in Cortland (the “Warrior”). This target consisted of five panels with 15 different images each and could be rent for $3 per hour or $10 per day! In 1916, Cortland residents voted to install an electric gun range adjacent to their high school – this marks the beginning of what would become one of America’s most popular gun ranges! Today, there are more than 20gun ranges located throughout Cortland County; including five within walking distance of downtown! One of the most famous companies that has situated itself in Cortland for many years is IBM which has made significant contributions to both local economy and social fabric within the townspeople themselves through its products and services. Despite its small size (just over 2 square miles) much effort goes into developing infrastructure such as public transportation system that makes it convenient for residents to get around town without having to drive or take bus trips all day long from one place to another. With its rich manufacturing history, including clock cases and watches made in nearby Auburn Hills, Cortland has been home to some of America's most renowned companies such as IWC (now Rolex), Ford Motor Company, Garment Workers Local No. 9 (GWL), Pepsi-Cola Corporation (PepsiCo) and ACM (Alliant Chemical Manufacturers). In recent years however, Cortland has seen declines in its commercial importance due to competition from larger cities such as Buffalo and Rochester. Today, Cortland is known for its distinctive architecture - many homes are built out of fieldstone or brick - as well as its wide variety of culture which includes art galleries, blues clubs/bars and classical music concerts throughout the year. There are also several parks located around town that offer beautiful views of Lake Erie or downtown Cleveland
Cortland County was formed in 1814 from part of the old Clinton County. It is named for General John Cortland, who fought in the War of 1812.
