He also served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-65). In 1865 he married Anna Maria Smith and they moved to Yonkers, New York where he continued his political career until his death in 1902. His wife moved back to Cortland after his death and started her own businessproducing chickens and eggs until her death in 1951.
