Cortland, New York is a small town located in the Hudson Valley of New York State. The population was 1,631 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cortland is known for its cheese and wine production and as one of the most beautiful small towns in upstate New York. The first settler in what would become Cortland was Nicholas Biddle in 1795. The town was platted on December 12, 1806 by Samuel Slater from a grant he had obtained from Peter Schuyler. In 1812, James Ketchum bought land here and established a gristmill that still operates today producing flour for local markets and also exporting to other countries. A post office was established here in 1814. The mills made neckwear for farmers and people traveling through central New York during the 1830s and 1840s such as Andrew Jackson who visited Cortland twice before his presidential campaign in 1838. Manufacturing began here again with an Exchange Furniture factory built by Julius Flicker in 1865 which became operational until it burned down on July 8th, 1924; four years after Flicker's death while working on it with his son-in-law John Wirtz (founder of Wirtz Glass). However, this factory did more than just produce furniture; it also produced metal products like door knobs and window sills before becoming defunct in 1957. During World War II much activity took place at the nearby Fort Drum Ammunition Plant due to its strategic location within easy reach of Manhattan via I-87/I-375 interchange (the only such facility then open within five miles of Manhattan). This led to many jobs being created locally including many truck drivers and manufacturers who supplied ammo to both Allied forces fighting overseas and Japanese forces engaged in war crimes at Hiroshima & Nagasaki . Afterward, much employment shifted away from manufacturing into services such as accounting or bookkeeping due to changes taking place throughout American industry during the postwar era such as automation which led to increased competition among companies for workers scarce resources like land or talent

Cortland, New York is a town in the San Joaquin County of California, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the North Fork of the American River about west of Sacramento. Cortland was founded in 1824 by Captain Caleb Bowen and his brother-in-law, Major James Ketchum. In 1827, Colonel Robert Hogg bought land from Captain Bowen and named it for his friend and mentor Cornelius Vanderbilt. After Hogg's death in 1850, the town passed to his son John Aiken Hogg Jr., who increased its size by purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) south of Cortland Lake in 1854. Development continued through the 20th century with a large influx of Italians and other European immigrants. The nearby towns of Madera and Stockton were merged into Cortland in 1957; however, they maintain separate identities to this day. Gothic Revival style buildings are still common throughout the town including churches such as First Presbyterian Church (1828), Mission San Francisco de Asís (1834), Christmastime Eve Episcopal Church (1858), Stantile School Annex (1912), Holy Cross Catholic church/school complex (1925), & Our Lady OfKNIGHT Roman Catholic church/school complex (1966). These buildings are also home to many smaller businesses that have been integral parts of local economy since their inception
