Cortland, New York is a city on the Hudson River in upstate New York. The population was 41,844 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Upstate New York. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Cortland was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The area that includes Cortland and parts of Schenectady and Troy were part of what was then called Dutchess County. On November 1, 1785, the towns of Romelles Falls and North Holland were merged into Cortland to form one town. In 1814, when Lawrence County was established, Cortland became a separate county with its own government. Cortland has been inhabited by the Mohawk people since at least 1653 according to Indian records cited in "A Narrative of His Life and Adventures". They built their first permanent village on the west bank of the Hudson River near present-day Romelles Falls in 1675 – they called it Ossining because there was an abundance of oaks trees thereabouts – and continued to live there until about 1800. In 1785, when three other villages north of Romelles Falls united with CortLAND (northwest corner from present-day Schenectady), all three villages became one: Romelles Falls/North Holland; Ossining; and Greenburgh/East Greenbush (the area east side of Westchester Creek). When Lawrence County was created on November 1, 1814 from portions of Fulton and Sullivan Counties as well as Chemung County (now Montgomery County), Cortland became a separate town with its own government. At this time Streetsboro (west side) became part of northtown while East Greenbush remained part of southtown – these different areas today make up most or all of downtown CortLAND which spans 2 blocks across two streets between High Street & Colfax Avenue NW Adjacent to State Capitol building on Half Moon Bay NW facing towards Waterfront Park across Hwy 9 & harbor views

The first settler in Cortland was Johannes Schreibert, who arrived with his family from Holland in 1785. He built a sawmill on the southwest corner of what is now State Route 7 and Elmira Road. In 1800, he married Anna Maria Kappeler; they would have five children together. In 1814, another pioneer named Cornelius Van der Sluis moved to Cortland from Utica; he established a store on Elmira Road and bought some land around it near where current State Route 7 meets Elmira Road. By 1830, most settlers were Dutch-American (mostly Protestants). The economy of Cortland was based largely on agriculture until about 1900 when there began to be significant industrial development due to its location between New York City and Buffalo

The town of Cortland, New York was founded by the Dutch in 1614. The name is derived from the word corte, meaning “a court” or “venue.” The first post office in Cortland was established in 1796. In 1811, the United States Congress authorized a survey of the area that would become Cortland County. The county was created on April 1, 1823.
