Cortland, New York is a town of about 25,000 people located in Cortland County on the eastern edge of thestate of New York. The population was estimated at 27,500 as of 2010. Townspeople have been using firearms for centuries and today there are over 100 businesses that sell guns and ammunition. The first gun in Cortland was a hickory bow and arrow owned by Jonas Weisinger in 1798. The first rifle in Cortland was an 18th century muzzleloader that belonged to Capt. John Woolridge. The area now known as Cortland was first settled by Native Americans and was first called Ka-ta-ni-yi or "The Great Meadows". When they returned, they found that all the hay had been burned down and all their goods were lost; so they decided to call the place "Cortland" after one of their own merchants, who had helped them find it. In 1807, there were only about 100 people living in Cortland. But by 1830, when Buffalo Trace Railroad reached Cortland through here from Buffalo, it had made this small community a major stop on its route throughout upstate New York because of its excellent transportation links to Syracuse and Buffalo. For much of its history until very recently (to within a few decades), Cortland was an agricultural center with extensive cornfields and dairy herds; however, during recent years production has shifted more towards manufacturing based industries such as textiles and plastics. Today’s downtown core contains several dozen businesses including two banks (one large national bank) along with many small businesses catering specifically to local needs such as daycare centers and health clinics; most notably Renaissance Health System - one of eastern NY's largest employers with over 12 thousand jobs statewide - just across Main Street from Golisano Arena where basketball games are played each season for school students from across Monroe County Peekskill High School nearby; Bedrock Pizza - home delivery service provider for surrounding villages since 1976 - also located just outside of downtown on Route 12A next door to Mohawk Bank building housing KFC since 1984; as well as two churches: First Methodist Church on Elmira Road off Route 5 north of Main Street and St John’s United Methodist Church east side off Route 12 south of Main Street near elementary schools like Sayreville Middle School & White Sands Elementary School both public schools serving grades 6 thru 8th grade while private schools like Clinton Academy serve grades PreK thru 3rd grade depending upon student demand...all these businesses bring vast economic activity not only into town but also out into surrounding villages too! During World War II, Cortland played an important role as one of two U.S military airfields located in western New York City—the other being Fort Drum—in support of Allied operations against Nazi Germany during the war years. For this reason, Cortland has been nicknamed "City Of Air Force One." Today's economy is based primarily on agriculture; however, there are also small businesses and services dotting the landscape here and there throughout most every sector of life including manufacturing (a few notable exceptions), health care (including hospitals run by Catholic Charities) and education (local colleges). There are also some continuing traditions associated with this small but prospering community such as its annual Pumpkin Festival which takes place over Labor Day weekend; its “Festival Saturday” which features arts & crafts activities throughout downtown; and its annual Harvest Fest which includes traditional foods like apple pie/pie crusts/frozen custards etc., along with educational exhibits about various aspects of agricultural production from early childhood to late adolescence...
