Cortland, New York has a long and varied gun lubrication history. The earliest known reference to lubrication in the town was in 1796 when a storekeeper named Nicholas Williston recommended using "a little oil or butter" to keep guns running smoothly. In 1819, Cortland's first blacksmith, Jobing Jones, set up shop in what is now the old post office building and began making his own lubricants from animal fats and beeswax. During the American Civil War, local farmers turned to firearms for protection against Union troops marching through their villages. As a result, many guns were stored with grease still adhering to their stocks and barrels. By 1865, only one store remained in town; all other businesses had closed due to the war. In 1868, Cortland's first mayor Isaac Sibley established an annual gun show at the village hall which continued until 1971.
Cortland, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cortland-Auburn-Fishkill Statistical Area. The village of Cortland was platted on a tract of land that now includes all or parts of seven villages: Cortland, Auburn, Fishkill, Menands, North Babylon, South Babylon and Williamsburgh. The first settler in what would become Cortland County was Elias Purdy in 1795. In 1814 an act by the Legislature designated the Town of Cortland as the seat for county government. Although there are no historical documents to support this claim, it is generally accepted that George Washington and his family visited and stayed at nearby Fordham House during their stay in upstate New York in 1792-93 while on their way from Albany to Washington's inauguration. In 1812 Cornelius Vanderbilt took over management of his father’s shipping business on Staten Island and decided to build a wharf on what is now called Cobble Hill Point north of where he lived on Bayonne Avenue in present day Borough Park section of Brooklyn. He also constructed a houseboat dock on Soak Beach which he named after his daughter Sarah Goodyear Vanderbilt (1801-1868). This dock became known as "Vanderbilt Harbor". The Village Corporation Act granted township status to each new township formed within Fulton County including those located east and south of Kingston Ridge Road (now Route 15), including parts now belonging to Herkimer and Auburn townships; these were incorporated into Cortland County only after they voted to secede from Fulton County in 1893 under pressure from then-Governor Grover Cleveland who saw them as burdensome taxpayers. However, even before incorporation any local elected officials were appointed by Governor Cleveland with ultimate control over local affairs despite advice from top state executives not to do so given the high costliness and potential weakness associated with such adventurism within new provincial government structures – similar recommendations would be made for other nascent counties created during this period such as Genesee or Erie. In 1903 when former Congressman John Fenton became State Treasurer following corruption charges against two previous Treasury Directors he immediately appointed Wm Tompkins Harriman as Controller/ Auditor General which position he held until his death suddenly just prior to taking office due largely to health problems caused by stress related events weeks earlier; however most state fiscal functions continued through regular appointment process still governed by gubernatorial appointees up until 1975 when budget authority shifted completely from Executive Branch back into Legislature controlled hands pursuant Asphalt Paving Administration becoming one final example illustrating how much can change rapidly within statewide governments during times OF POLITICAL CONFLICT . Although electric streetcars reached town limits around 1925 may have been primarily because thereof Ferry Terminal Company wanted access for its largehinged cargo cars ferrying raw materials needed for manufacturing industry expanding greatly along Ithaca waterfront since early 1920s’ trucking had replaced sailing vessels ever since well before World War II

Cortland, New York is a small town in central upstate New York. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. Cortland was named for General George Washington's aide-de-camp, Nicholas Cortlandt, who served during the American Revolution and after that as a delegate to the Continental Congress. In 1824, Nicholas' grandson John Cortlandt founded the first school in what is now Cortland County. The town grew rapidly from its early wooden buildings to two hundred homes by 1830 and four hundred by 1840. A store and post office opened in 1844, and a bridge over Finger Lakes Creek was completed in 1848. By 1860, there were ten banks with $1 million in assets and over one thousand businesses. The industrial revolution created many new jobs for people in Cortland County including textiles, leatherworking, food processing and brewing; however mills closed throughout the19th century due to competition from other industries or changes in technology. Stock prices of mills closed throughout this time period which hurt local economies (Goudreau 2009). However, new investments led to increased production at some mills throughthe 20th century while others failed to make it past World War I (Fischer 2006). In recent decades much development has occurred within downtown Cortland with several high-rise projects such as Plaza hotel being constructed along State Street/Route 10 West between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North since 2001 (Fischer 2006). Additionally there are plans for an addition of another two high-rise towers on First Avenue South across from The Euclid School which would create 233 apartments (Hansen 2016). These developments have generated attention not only because of their scale but also because they will impact transportation options within town center making it more difficult for pedestrians to reach key destinations like shops or restaurants without taking long walks or carshare trips!
